Traditionally, analytics meant moving data out of the operational database into a separate warehouse or analytical engine. The PostgreSQL ecosystem now offers a wider spectrum: analytics can stay inside PostgreSQL through extensions, be pushed down to a dedicated analytical engine, or share storage with a lakehouse-oriented stack. This article gives a short tour through representative options, focusing on the stack, use case, solution type, and underlying technical approach. It is not a complete overview and deliberately leaves out proprietary platforms such as Google AlloyDB analytical capabilities and EDB Postgres AI analytics. ## The Main Choices | Stack | Type | Primary use case | Technical approach | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | PostgreSQL + Citus | Extension | Distributed analytics | Sharding + columnar storage | | PostgreSQL + ParadeDB | Extension | Search / text analytics | BM25 and other indexes | | PostgreSQL + TimescaleDB | Extension | Time-series analytics | Partitioning + compression | | PostgreSQL + pg\_duckdb | Extension | OLAP analytics | Vectorized execution | | pg\_duckdb + MotherDuck | External analytical engine | OLAP analytics | External columnar execution | | pg\_clickhouse + ClickHouse | Extension + analytical engine | Near-real-time analytics | CDC + query pushdown | | Lakebase + Databricks Lakehouse | Managed PostgreSQL + lakehouse | Transactional + analytical workloads | Row-to-columnar transcoding | ## Citus **Stack:** PostgreSQL + Citus Citus is an open source PostgreSQL extension that horizontally scales data and queries across multiple nodes. Its capabilities include table sharding, distributed query execution, and shard rebalancing. For analytical workloads, Citus also provides **columnar storage** for append-heavy and scan-heavy tables. Storing values by column can reduce I/O and improve compression, making it relevant when horizontal scale-out and column-oriented storage should remain within PostgreSQL. ## ParadeDB **Stack:** PostgreSQL + ParadeDB ParadeDB adds search capabilities to PostgreSQL, including full-text search, keyword search, and top-N queries. Its key idea is to keep search close to the operational database rather than maintaining a separate search system through ETL. A central technique is the **BM25 index** , a probabilistic ranking algorithm that does not require model training or embeddings. The trade-off is write overhead, as inserts, updates, and deletes must also maintain search indexes. ## TimescaleDB by Tiger Data **Stack:** PostgreSQL + TimescaleDB TimescaleDB extends PostgreSQL with time-based partitioning, compression, and query optimizations for large scans and aggregations. It also provides **columnar storage** and **continuous aggregates (CAGGs)**, which maintain continuously updated aggregate views to reduce the cost of repeated analytical queries. ## DuckDB and pg\_duckdb **Stack:** PostgreSQL + pg\_duckdb DuckDB is an embedded analytical database designed for OLAP workloads. Its columnar storage and vectorized execution accelerate scans, aggregations, and analytical queries. The `pg_duckdb` extension lets selected queries run through DuckDB’s engine while PostgreSQL remains the operational system. It can also connect to external analytical environments such as data lakes or MotherDuck, trading tighter integration for more separation and scale. ## pg\_clickhouse + ClickHouse **Stack:** PostgreSQL + pg\_clickhouse + ClickHouse ClickHouse is an open source, column-oriented database designed for near-real-time analytics. PostgreSQL can handle transactions while ClickHouse stores and executes analytical workloads. A common pattern uses **change data capture (CDC)** to replicate PostgreSQL changes from the WAL into ClickHouse. The `pg_clickhouse` extension also lets analytical SQL issued from PostgreSQL access ClickHouse tables and push supported filters, joins, and aggregations down for execution. ## Databricks Lakebase **Stack:** Lakebase Postgres + Databricks Lakehouse Lakebase is Databricks’ managed PostgreSQL service. Its **Lake Transactional/Analytical Processing (LTAP)** architecture transcodes row-oriented data into columnar Parquet in object storage. Analytical engines can query this representation while PostgreSQL continues serving transactions. Unlike `pg_clickhouse`, the integration happens primarily at the shared storage and Databricks query-layer level, rather than using PostgreSQL as a query front end. ## So, Is PostgreSQL Becoming an Analytics Platform? The PostgreSQL ecosystem now covers a broad spectrum. Citus and TimescaleDB bring distributed and columnar capabilities closer to PostgreSQL itself. `pg_duckdb` adds specialized analytical execution, while ParadeDB extends PostgreSQL toward search. ClickHouse and lakehouse architectures move analytical processing further away from the operational database. The useful question is which trade-off fits the workload: **data freshness, query complexity, scale, operational isolation, data movement, and additional infrastructure**. Performance and price-performance remain workload-dependent properties that need to be measured rather than inferred from architecture alone. At benchANT, our public [PostgreSQL DBaaS ranking](https://benchant.com/ranking/database-ranking?tab=oltp) compares OLTP performance and price-performance across managed PostgreSQL services. The next step is to extend this work with OLAP performance measurements for PostgreSQL DBaaS. As usual with databases, **architecture tells you what is possible; benchmarking tells you how it actually performs.** ## Related Articles - [Making Data Warehouses Fast: A Developer’s Story](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/107-making-data-warehouses-fast-a-developer-s-story) - [Graph and AI Trends 2026: Why Is AI Running but Not Yet Delivering?](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/680-graph-and-ai-trends-2026-why-is-ai-running-but-not-yet-delivering) - [Top Big Data Technologies That You Need to Know](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/108-top-big-data-technologies-that-you-need-to-know) - [Why Event-Driven Architecture Isn’t About Speed (and When You Actually Need It)](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/magazine/745-why-event-driven-architecture-isn-t-about-speed-and-when-you-actually-need-it) ## Related Videos - [Optimizing Discovery: PostgreSQL's Role in Transforming GetYourGuide's Search](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1647-optimizing-discovery-postgresql-s-role-in-transforming-getyourguide-s-search) - [Parquet, Delta, Iceberg & Ducklake - An introduction for developers](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/100075-parquet-delta-iceberg-ducklake-an-introduction-for-developers) - [How building an industry DBMS differs from building a research one](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/768-how-building-an-industry-dbms-differs-from-building-a-research-one) - [Tracking vehicles at scale](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/videos/1999-tracking-vehicles-at-scale) ## Related Jobs - [Software Development Engineer 4 - Database Engineer](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/jobs/48591-software-development-engineer-4-database-engineer) at **WEX** - [Data Strategy-Manager](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/jobs/ext/4240531-data-strategy-manager) at **PwC** - [Junior Software Engineer, Data](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/jobs/ext/4089391-junior-software-engineer-data) at **Almedia** - [Director of Engineering - Data Platform SDM5](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/jobs/48598-director-of-engineering-data-platform-sdm5) at **WEX** - [Deal Data Technology & Analytics, Senior Associate](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/jobs/ext/3884967-deal-data-technology-analytics-senior-associate) at **PwC** - [Principal Software Engineer, AI Compute Platform](https://www.wearedevelopers.com/jobs/ext/3912651-principal-software-engineer-ai-compute-platform) at **ARM**
