Job description

  • First point of contact for researchers and administrative staff regarding IT enquiries and faults
  • Receiving, processing and tracking support requests via the ticketing system, telephone, email and on-site
  • Installation, configuration and maintenance of Windows workstation systems
  • Provision, replacement and commissioning of IT hardware (PCs, laptops, peripherals)
  • Support with the management of Enterprise Windows clients
  • Software deployment and client management using Microsoft SCCM or comparable systems
  • Support with the procurement, inventory management and lifecycle management of hardware and software
  • Licence management in the client environment
  • Creation and maintenance of documentation, guides and knowledge bases
  • Contributing to the further development and optimisation of IT service processes
  • Assistance with the administration of Microsoft Active Directory
  • Assistance with the maintenance of the central backup system
  • Participation in an on-call rota (additional remuneration provided)

Requirements

  • Completed vocational training in the IT sector (e.g. IT specialist, IT systems electronics technician) or a comparable qualification, or demonstrable equivalent knowledge and experience
  • Good knowledge of current Windows operating systems
  • Experience in user support or an IT service desk environment
  • Ideally, experience in using software distribution, client management and ticketing systems
  • A service-oriented approach and a genuine enjoyment of helping others
  • Strong communication skills and a team spirit
  • Good command of German and English (at least B2 level or equivalent)
  • An independent, structured approach to work and a willingness to familiarise yourself with new topics

You can expect an international and dynamic research environment. Following a structured induction, you will take on independent responsibility for supporting our users and contribute to the further development of our IT services.

The position is initially for a fixed term of two years. At the end of this period, subject to suitability, there is provision for conversion to a permanent contract. The position can be filled with a flexible start date, ideally on 01.10.2026.

About the company

The Max Born Institute for Non-linear Optics and Short-time Spectroscopy (MBI) is an institute of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB). The FVB is the governing body of seven non-university scientific research institutes in Berlin with approximately 1,600 staff, which are funded by the Federal Republic of Germany and the Association of German States. The research institutes are members of the Leibniz Association. The Max Born Institute (www.mbi-berlin.de) is based at the Berlin-Adlershof science and business park. It conducts fundamental research on and with lasers for ultrashort light pulses and explores potential applications. The IT Department manages the IT infrastructure comprising around 700 clients and 100 servers, maintains the central infrastructure (network and servers) and provides a wide range of central IT and communications services for the approximately 180 staff in research, technical and administrative roles. In the client environment, we work primarily with Windows-based clients as well as a Microsoft-, Linux- and Solaris-based server environment.
