Job description
Friends of the Verde River is seeking a motivated Restoration and GIS Specialist to support river restoration work and manage spatial data for the Verde River watershed.
This role blends field leadership with GIS and mapping-supporting hands-on restoration in the field and technical data work in the office., * Manage GIS data, create maps, and maintain ArcGIS Field Maps apps
- Build project maps for grants, reporting, and planning
- Create StoryMaps to communicate restoration work
- Lead and supervise field crews removing invasive plants
- Collect riparian vegetation and monitoring data
- Support field operations (equipment, logistics, herbicide coordination)
- Assist with outreach events and partner coordination
- Maintain records for reporting and documentation
Field + Office Work
Spring (April-June) is primarily field-based, leading crews along the Verde River and tributaries.
The rest of the year is hybrid, based in Cottonwood, AZ, focused on GIS work, mapping, planning, and crew support.
Fieldwork may include hiking in rough terrain, working in extreme weather, camping, and operating equipment in remote areas.
Requirements
- Experience with ArcGIS and map creation
- Background in ecology, botany, GIS, natural resources, or related field
- Ability to identify plants and collect field data
- Strong communication and organization skills
- Ability to work independently in a hybrid role
- Willingness to work outdoors in challenging conditions
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel regionally
