Job description

We are seeking a motivated Graduate Embedded Software Engineer to join the R&D team at Xwatch. This role will be based in our new R&D center in Portsmouth and is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the development of safety systems used across the construction industry. The successful candidate will work closely with experienced engineers to develop, test, and optimise embedded software solutions, gaining valuable industry experience in a collaborative environment., * Support the design, development and integration of software systems to meet project requirements and timescales, working alongside experienced engineers.

  • Contribute to software development for machine control systems as part of a project team.
  • Help create, execute, and document integration tests for the software system and machine interfaces.
  • Support the installation and commissioning team with calibration and functional verification.
  • Learn to apply engineering procedures and regulatory standards to software design, with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Willingness to undertake occasional travel to customer sites to verify software systems, accompanied by senior engineers.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • A 2:1 or above in an engineering, computer science, electronics or related STEM degree, or equivalent experience.
  • Programming ability in C, C++ or rust particularly for embedded systems such as ARM microcontrollers or Raspberry Pi.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and clear, accurate reporting.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to manage your own workload.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment or individually.

Desired but not essential (full training will be given):

  • Experience with Python
  • Exposure to Linux, particularly for use with Docker and self hosted applications
  • Knowledge of PLC programming with Codesys using the Structured Text language
  • Schematic and PCB design using Kicad
  • Knowledge of hydraulics systems will be an advantage
  • Software interfacing to CAN-based sensors and analogue/digital sensors and actuators.
  • An understanding of safety-related software design techniques such as IEC 61508-3; and experience developing graphical user interfaces for machine control.
