Job description

As a Senior System Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the design and development of advanced power electronics converter systems used across electric vehicles, rail, and renewable energy applications. Working in Birmingham, you will support the complete engineering lifecycle, from initial concept and system design through prototyping, integration, testing, and optimisation.

This Senior System Design Engineer job will include:

  • Designing and developing power electronics converter systems
  • Performing system requirements analysis, modelling, simulation, and optimisation
  • Working with AC/DC, DC/DC, and DC/AC converter topologies
  • Supporting prototype development, component selection, and system integration
  • Defining technical specifications and interfaces for sub-components
  • Applying AI and generative AI techniques to enhance the power electronics design process
  • Carrying out efficiency analysis, thermal simulation, and control system development
  • Developing test plans, analysing results, and preparing technical documentation
  • Supporting technology research and future engineering roadmap activities

Requirements

  • Strong experience in power electronics converter design and development
  • Practical knowledge of high-voltage systems (1200V+), IGBT, and SiC MOSFET technologies
  • Experience with converter topologies, multi-level converters, and control strategies
  • Experience with simulation and engineering tools including MATLAB, PLECS, ANSYS, CAD, and CAE software
  • Understanding of thermal management, component loss analysis, and system efficiency optimisation
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to produce high-quality technical documentation
