Job description

Layer IQ is a B2B data infrastructure company providing asset intelligence for circular IT - giving enterprises visibility into the cost, value, and impact of their hardware across its full lifecycle. Our core value is integrating multiple data sources and inter-relating that data to produce new insights and datasets. We work across enterprise, OEMs, carbon markets, and equipment disposition and brokerage. We're a small, fast-moving team defining a new category, and we're looking for an engineer to help us build the product.

The role

This is a core engineering role. You'll build features end to end across the entire stack - frontend, backend, data, and the real-time and background systems that connect them. The team is small, so you'll own meaningful surface area, make product and technical calls without heavy process, and ship quickly. For the right person, we're open to converting this into a full-time role with equity.

How we work

We use AI heavily - Cursor for building, and LLMs for generating tests and working with data. But you are the human in the loop, and you own everything that ships under your name. The agent is a tool, not an authority: we expect you to read and understand every line it produces, test your work manually, question the architecture and tests it hands back, and catch the plausible-but-wrong output a less careful engineer would merge. Unexamined output doesn't count as speed. If you're the kind of engineer who accepts whatever the model returns, this isn't the right role.

What you'll work on

  • Build features end to end across the front end (React / Next.js) and back end (Node.js)
  • Design and consume REST APIs, including real-time functionality delivered to the browser over WebSockets
  • Model, query, and scale our relational data as the product and customer base grow
  • Build background jobs and durable, multi-step workflows
  • Integrate and inter-relate data from multiple external sources into new, usable datasets
  • Support customers directly as issues arise - investigating, reproducing, and resolving problems in production
  • Work within a healthy SDLC - feature branches, pull requests, code review, and multiple environments
  • Occasionally work with LLMs to process, enrich, or extract from our data (a supporting part of the role, not its focus)

Requirements

  • A CS degree, or equivalent professional programming experience - roughly 3-5 years building software
  • Strong full-stack proficiency in TypeScript, with React (and Tailwind) on the front end and Node.js on the back end
  • Solid grasp of relational databases (Postgres or similar): schema design, query performance, and how to scale them
  • Comfort designing and consuming REST APIs across a client/server boundary, including real-time patterns
  • Fluency with a modern SDLC: Git branching, pull requests, code review, and working across environments
  • Effective AI-assisted development (we use Cursor), paired with the judgment described above - you verify, you don't just accept
  • Comfort in a tested codebase - we use Vitest and lean on AI to generate tests as we build, so you'll need the judgment to tell a meaningful test from a useless one
  • A security-minded approach to writing code, appropriate to handling enterprise data
  • Self-directed, comfortable with ambiguity, and able to operate independently in an early-stage company

Nice to have (we use these - but we'd rather hire for the concept and teach the tool)

  • Real-time / pub-sub messaging
  • Durable workflow orchestration (Inngest, Temporal, or similar)
  • Caching with Redis or an equivalent
  • js App Router, shadcn/ui, and monorepo tooling (Turborepo, pnpm)
  • Auth / SSO integration
  • Instrumentation and observability
  • Working with LLMs against structured data
  • Familiarity with enterprise IT, ITAD, OEMs, or carbon/sustainability markets
