Job description

The University of Colorado (CU) Anschutz School of Medicine (SOM) Research Office, within the Dean's Office, is seeking an experienced and skilled Data Analyst to lead data analysis, reporting, and visualization for Biomedical Research activities and Service Centers, and for Centers and Institutes in the School of Medicine. This position will report to the Research Office Manager.

In this role, the Data Analyst will serve as a subject-matter expert (SME) for the unit, analyze research-related financial and operational data, build dashboards, and support leadership in answering strategic questions. Strong analytical and visualization capabilities are critical. Cross-functional collaboration and communication skills are also important, as the Data Analyst will work closely with research leadership, finance, and IT teams to ensure data integrity and actionable insights.

Specific projects may include: Tracking research expenditures of faculty receiving SOM grant funding; tracking requests, expenditures, and future commitments of Centers and Institutes; building dashboards for visualization of activities of SOM research cores, Centers, or Institutes (with data related to finances, services requested, key outcomes, etc.); extracting departmental research and Center/Institute expenditure data for space utilization reporting; creating dashboards and reports of financial commitments of Research Affairs office to support faculty recruitment, retention, and re-investment, and of SOM to support Center and Institutes.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Analyze financial and operational data related to biomedical research, service center, and center/institute activities.
  • Develop dashboards and reports to support leadership decision-making.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define data requirements and reporting needs.
  • Monitor cost center performance and support budget planning and forecasting.
  • Ensure data accuracy, consistency, and compliance with institutional standards.
  • Support data integration across systems (e.g., Oracle Cloud, Azure, SAP).
  • Present findings and actionable recommendations to leadership and working groups.
  • Contribute to process improvement and administrative centralization initiatives.
  • Assist in the development of data governance and documentation practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business or data analytics, data science, computer science, engineering, business or public administration, or related field.
  • Three to four (3-4) years of experience conducting quantitative analysis and data interpretation, designing dashboards or reports for decision-making, and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/military/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in business analytics, data analytics, or related data-focused fields.
  • Experience supporting research service centers, shared resources, or core facilities, including coordination of operations, stakeholders, and service delivery.
  • Experience working in higher education, academic medicine, or healthcare systems.
  • Certifications or experience using data visualization and analytics tools such as Power BI, Tableau, advanced Excel, SQL, or data querying tools.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Data visualization and dashboard development (Power BI, Tableau, or similar tools).
  • Strong proficiency in Excel for financial and operational analysis.
  • Exposure to large datasets and integrating data from multiple systems.
  • Ability to translate complex data into clear insights and visual reports for leadership.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills when sharing findings with stakeholders.

There are many additional perks & programs with the CU Advantage., The starting salary range for this position has been established as $69,591 to $88,519.

The above salary range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
