Job description
We are seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to lead the definition, decomposition, management, and governance of requirements for complex surveillance systems supporting marine and land border security operations.
This role is responsible for translating operational, customer, regulatory, product, and technical needs into structured system requirements that guide technology strategy, solution design, integration, verification, and acceptance. Working closely with Product Management, engineering teams, customers, and operational stakeholders, you will ensure technical requirements are complete, traceable, testable, and aligned to both mission outcomes and product roadmap priorities.
The successful new colleague will act as the bridge between customer needs, product strategy, and engineering delivery, helping shape scalable surveillance capabilities across sensing, communications, analytics, and command-and-control systems.
Please note - the role of Systems Engineer is a hybrid role, working both in our Bristol office and WFH., Own the end-to-end requirements architecture for marine and land border surveillance solutions Capture, analyse, and structure operational, technical, regulatory, and non-functional requirements. Translate mission needs into clear, measurable, and testable system requirements Decompose high-level requirements into subsystem and component-level specifications Maintain requirements traceability across the full engineering lifecycle Produce and maintain key artefacts including system requirements specifications, interface requirements, traceability matrices, and verification plans Define verification and validation criteria to ensure requirements can be proven through analysis, inspection, simulation, or testing Partner closely with Product Management to align system requirements with product roadmap priorities, release planning, and capability evolution Support feature prioritisation by assessing technical feasibility, delivery risk, and architectural impact Collaborate with engineering, architecture, and integration teams to ensure delivered solutions remain aligned with approved requirements Support governance activities including requirements reviews, change control, compliance, and customer acceptance
Requirements
Extensive experience in systems engineering, requirements engineering, solution architecture, or related technical roles Strong experience writing and managing complex technical requirements for large-scale systems Experience working on surveillance, defence, security, or other mission-critical operational systems Strong knowledge of requirements engineering, decomposition, traceability, and verification methodologies Experience collaborating cross-functionally with Product Management, engineering, and delivery teams Ability to translate ambiguous operational needs into structured technical requirements Strong understanding of complex integrated systems including sensors, communications, compute, analytics, and command-and-control Excellent stakeholder management, facilitation, and written communication skills Experience with systems modelling methodologies and formal requirements capture tools (for example SysML)
Highly Beneficial Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor's / Master's degree in - Systems Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Defence Technology, or a related discipline Experience in border security, maritime surveillance, coastal monitoring, or ISR environments Knowledge of radar, EO/IR systems, tracking systems, geospatial analytics, and Sensor Fusion
