Job description

The Data Engineer I is responsible for supporting the development, testing, and maintenance of data pipelines and data assets that contribute to MetLife's data and analytics ecosystem. Working under the guidance of senior engineers, this role participates in data engineering initiatives while building technical expertise in cloud technologies, data integration, and modern data platforms., This is an opportunity for an early-career data engineer to develop experience with Databricks, Azure, ETL/ELT development, and enterprise data platforms while contributing to project delivery as part of a collaborative team.

  • Assist with the development, testing, and maintenance of ETL/ELT pipelines on Databricks and Azure platforms under the guidance of senior team members.
  • Support data ingestion, transformation, and validation activities for structured and unstructured data sources.
  • Participate in the implementation of dimensional data models and help prepare data for reporting and analytics use cases.
  • Monitor data pipelines and scheduled processes and assist with troubleshooting issues identified by senior engineers.
  • Support data quality, governance, and documentation activities using established team standards and procedures.
  • Participate in code reviews, testing activities, and deployment support tasks.
  • Collaborate with business and technology partners to understand data requirements and support solution delivery.
  • Contribute to Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.

  • 1-3 years of experience in data engineering, analytics, data integration, or a related technical discipline.

  • Working knowledge of SQL for querying and manipulating data.

  • Exposure to Python, Scala, Java, or a similar programming language.

  • Basic understanding of relational databases and data warehousing concepts.

  • Exposure to cloud technologies such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

  • Ability to learn new technologies and work effectively in a team environment.

  • Exposure to Databricks, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, or similar cloud data technologies.

  • Exposure to ETL/ELT development and data integration concepts.

  • Familiarity with reporting and visualization tools such as Power BI, Cognos, or Tableau.

  • Understanding of data quality, data governance, and metadata management concepts.

  • Experience working in Agile delivery environments.

  • Exposure to financial services, insurance, or other regulated industries.

Location Expectation: This is a hybrid role requiring a minimum of 3 days per week in office.
