Job description
The job of IT Technician was established for the purpose/s of installing workstations and repairing stand alone, WAN and LAN networks (i.e., servers, switches, workstations, and printers on installing and repairing peripherals, installing workstation software, and providing support through help desk and on site assistance. This job functions at a level of independence that requires creativity, initiative, and the ability to use various technologies and computer platforms.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Administer systems (e.g. email systems, accounts, print queue, workstation ID, IP assignments, computer labs, classroom computers, security, antivirus, spyware, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of services to authorized users.
Assist in the installation and configuration of laptops, workstations, tablets, and mobile devices (e.g., Microsoft Windows and Apple OSX, etc.) for the purpose of network placement.
Assist with District information systems applications (e.g. Help Desk, student, finance, personnel, learning, communication, facilities, security, child nutrition, library, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring efficient operations and correct data extraction.
Maintain proficiency in the use of all new and current operating systems and hardware approved for use by District staff and students.
Coordinate with other staff within district for the purpose of completing projects and work orders efficiently.
Install District user workstations, software and peripherals, including stand alone, connected to LAN, Wireless and connected to a WAN (e.g. service packs, application software, operating software, hardware upgrades, etc.) for the purpose of upgrading and maintaining District WAN/LAN and telecommunication systems.
Maintain and repair data systems equipment (e.g. servers, computers, printers, scanners, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring efficient operations. Support District information system applications (e.g., student, finance, personnel, communication, facilities, child nutrition, library, etc.).
Manage inventory of computers, printers and peripherals; set up Chromebook and laptop carts, and refresh inventory. Verify inventory is accurate in Help Desk, and ensure they are appropriately provisioned and organized in Google Console. Maintains proper licensing.
Analyze, interpret and implement hardware and software specifications as needed.
Participate in meetings, workshops and District provided training for the purpose of keeping up to date with knowledge related to workstations, networks and software to meet District needs.
Provide training and orientation to District computer users, either one-to-one or in a group setting.
Provide instruction to District personnel and public users (students, visitors, community members, vendors, etc.) with BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) access.
Install and/or support audio and projection systems; troubleshoots connectivity and quality issues.
Procure equipment and materials (e.g. computer components, tools, cables, etc.) for the purpose of resolving technical support issues on District equipment.
Comply with policies and procedures to ensure the safety of self and others, as well as network security and confidentiality.
Prepare and maintain documentation and records of installation, repairs, system setup, maintenance and purchases, and manages inventory of all site computers and peripherals.
Provide on-site and help desk technical support to users (e.g. procedures, systems use, data extraction, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring users and sites are operational.
Respond to inquiries from a variety of sources (e.g. staff, administrators, school site personnel, outside vendors and service providers, etc.) for the purpose of providing technical assistance and support.
Review and evaluate procedures and schedules for the purpose of efficient use of technology equipment by district staff and students.
Assist in the procurement process of new and current hardware and software for the purpose of maintaining efficient operating systems and programs.
Evaluate systems and the need to upgrade dependent upon District needs and budget for the purpose of ensuring operating efficiency.
Assist in the procurement process of hardware and software for the purpose of upgrade/updating systems and/or for new programs. Request quotations for the purpose of providing cost information, to District staff.
Transport a variety of items (e.g. equipment, supplies, etc.) for the purpose of providing materials to job site or transporting equipment for repair.
Coordinate with vendors on software, hardware and operations installation; troubleshoots resolution of technical issues, administration, and maintenance.
Troubleshoot malfunctions of network hardware and/or software applications within the District's local and wide area networks, telephones and security systems (e.g. servers, switches, routers, network protocols, etc.) for the purpose of resolving operational issues and restoring services. Assist with troubleshooting network and server issues.
Complete special projects as assigned.
Perform other technical duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
Requirements
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: utilizing pertinent network, application, operating system monitoring and troubleshooting software; adhering to safety practices; planning and managing projects; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: current, legacy and emerging operating systems; environments and network protocols; router configurations; Inter/Intranet applications; and concepts of grammar and punctuation.
ABILITY is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and utilize equipment under a variety of conditions for multiple purposes. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a wide variety of types of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability-based competencies are required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: setting priorities; establishing effective relationships; being attentive to detail; communicating with diverse groups; conveying technical information to non-technical audiences; and working nonstandard hours.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EXPERIENCE: Job related experience is preferred. Knowledge of all industry operation systems (Mac, Windows, iOS, Chrome, etc.), basic productivity applications (Microsoft Office, Google Apps, email, web browsers, etc.), principles, techniques, methods, tools, and procedures pertaining to various aspects of networked computer systems, basic industry standard networking principles, and basic network protocols, cabling, routers, and switches is preferred.
EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent.
EQUIVALENCY: A combination of education, training, and/or job experience needed to perform the essential functions of the job.
REQUIRED TESTING: Pre-employment Proficiency Test may be required., Physical requirement: Moderate lifting, ability to see computer screen and printed material, speak and
hear at normal room level, manual dexterity to use computer terminals, and to perform hardware
installation and repair.
