Job description
We are seeking a Sr. Research Data Manager who will oversee the design, implementation, and management of research data for an assigned study.
This position will provide oversight over the data collection infrastructure for the AIDS Linked to the IntraVenous Experience (ALIVE) Study, an ongoing community-based observational cohort study of people who inject drugs based in the Baltimore area that has been ongoing without interruption since 1989. In collaboration with study PIs and staff, they will play a central role in a comprehensive revamping of the study's data collection approaches and instruments to a flexible modular survey structure through REDCap that will allow for inclusion of new instruments, improve participant tracking capability and enhanced research activities. They will also oversee quality control and quality assurance activities in the cohort and develop codebooks for use by analysts and investigators and coordinate activities across the data and the clinical data collection teams. This position will require persistence, attention to detail, and a self-motivated individual who can work independently and solve problems. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in modernizing a landmark longitudinal cohort study that has been at the forefront of research on HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, and substance use since 1988. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape the future direction of data collection for this important study.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Design, implement and manage computerized systems for analysis of complex research data.
- Responsible for database creation and management including data checking and cleaning, creation and maintenance of data dictionaries for datasets, merging data, creating and recoding variables to prepare data for analyses.
- Assure quality control of the research data and proper design and implementation of databases.
- Write computer codes in a procedural-oriented computer language to collect data and accomplish statistical analysis; select the appropriate computing environment (PC, minicomputer, or mainframe).
- Analyze a variety of large and complex data sets using a variety of standard statistical techniques including regression, longitudinal data analysis, and nonparametric analyses.
- Present and summarize analyses in various formats including raw output, tables, and graphics, oral and written reports.
- Collaborate with manager and faculty investigators to plan and implement analyses.
- Utilize standard and non-standard biostatistical and database methods for the production of statistical analyses.
- Maintain appropriate systems for database-related management.
- Keep abreast of technical and academic resources related to methodology of statistical analysis.
- Make suggestions or provide solutions to problems related to data management and statistical analysis.
- Participate in writing statistical plans for grants.
- Contribute to scientific manuscripts and presentations related to study results.
- Create and maintain databases for archiving analytic results and other research information.
- Other duties as assigned.
Additional Duties & Responsibilities
Data Collection Redesign & Implementation
- Lead the reorganization and restructuring of the study's data collection framework; oversee the design and implementation of a new flexible, modular survey structure using RedCap; develop database reports to optimize and support data collection and participant tracking.
Survey Development & Management
- Design and pilot test new survey instruments; revise existing survey instruments and harmonize with data captured from prior surveys/other similar existing studies; coordinate feedback from various study staff and investigators and organize revisions of survey instruments.
Training & Compliance
- Train/retrain interviewers on new and existing protocols; correspond with the IRB and ensure ongoing regulatory compliance; maintain documentation of all procedures and protocol changes.
Collaboration & Communication
- Collaborate and communicate with various study staff members, multidisciplinary investigator team, and project administrators; provide regular progress updates on implementation of new systems., Johns Hopkins University requires all faculty, staff, and students to receive the seasonal flu vaccine. Exceptions to the flu vaccine requirements may be provided to individuals for religious beliefs or medical reasons. Requests for an exception must be submitted to the JHU vaccination registry.
The following additional provisions may apply, depending upon campus. Your recruiter will advise accordingly. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in a related field.

Five years of related experience.

Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula., * Master's Degree.

Demonstrated experience with REDCap database design and implementation.

Experience managing complex, multi-component research studies.

Experience working with people who use drugs or similar vulnerable populations.

Familiarity with longitudinal cohort study design and management.

Experience with data migration and system transitions.

If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
