Job description
CGI is seeking to hire a highly technical Back End Software Engineer to modernize a legacy application, design clean and scalable APIs, and lead critical data migration efforts. You'll work across service layers, integration points, and data pipelines to build a reliable, extensible foundation for future capabilities.
This role is ideal for engineers who understand Spring Boot at a framework level, design APIs with long term maintainability in mind, and can execute complex data migration patterns with precision.
This is a Full-Time, On-Site employment opportunity located in Smithfield, RI.
Your future duties and responsibilities:
API Design & Service Layer Engineering
. Design RESTful APIs with clear resource modeling, versioning strategy, and predictable error handling.
. Implement Spring Boot controllers, service layers, and repositories using best practice patterns (DTOs, mappers, validation layers).
. Define and enforce API contracts using OpenAPI/Swagger, ensuring consistency across services.
. Build middleware such as interceptors, filters, and exception handlers to standardize cross cutting concerns.
. Optimize API performance through pagination, caching, connection pooling, and async/reactive patterns when appropriate.
Spring Boot Internals & Platform Engineering:
. Configure and tune Spring Boot internals including:
o Auto configuration
o Dependency injection scopes
o Actuator endpoints
o Custom starters
o Application context lifecycle
. Implement Spring Batch jobs for large scale data processing, chunking, retry logic, and fault tolerant workflows.
. Build resilient integrations using Spring's WebClient, RestTemplate (legacy), and messaging templates.
. Apply advanced Spring concepts such as conditional beans, profiles, configuration properties, and environment driven runtime behavior.
. Ensure observability through structured logging, distributed tracing, and metrics instrumentation.
Data Migration & ETL Patterns
. Design and execute data migration strategies including bulk loads, incremental syncs, and schema evolution.
. Build ETL pipelines using Spring Batch, SQL scripts, or external ETL tools to ensure data continuity and integrity.
. Perform data profiling, mapping, transformation, and validation to support migration accuracy.
. Optimize relational database interactions through indexing strategies, query tuning, and connection management.
. Collaborate with DBAs and data engineers to ensure safe migration execution under production constraints.
Modernization & Platform Evolution
. Refactor legacy services into modular, maintainable components aligned with modern architectural standards.
. Introduce automation into CI/CD pipelines for build validation, regression detection, and deployment consistency.
. Contribute to the design of a new, extensible platform that supports future domain capabilities.
. Deliver reliably under aggressive timelines while maintaining engineering quality.
Requirements
6 9 years of Java (Spring Boot / Spring Batch)
. 3+ years working with relational databases (schema design, stored procedures, performance tuning)
. 2+ years working with ETL tools or performing data migrations
. Strong understanding of:
o REST API design principles
o Spring Boot internals and configuration
o Spring Batch job orchestration
o SQL optimization and understanding of data design and modeling
. Experience with Dev Assist tools (automation helpers, diagramming, code generation).
. Experience with SQL Server is a plus.
. Experience with test automation tooling (JUnit, Mockito, Test-Containers) is a plus.
. Experience with AWS (Lambda, RDS, S3, API Gateway) is a plus.
. High ownership mindset - drives work from design through delivery.
. Comfortable working across multiple concurrent business capabilities.
Education Required: Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field.
