Job description
- Own the overarching software architecture for ECAM production systems, defining system boundaries, data models, APIs, and technology stacks from edge to cloud.
- Lead the design of real-time control, data acquisition, and process monitoring software, ensuring sub-millisecond precision and high reliability in complex physical and electrochemical operations.
- Establish technical roadmaps and architectural standards, driving software best practices, design patterns, modularity, and security across multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
- Partner cross-functionally with hardware, electrochemical, process, and applications engineering to translate complex physical requirements into reliable, maintainable software architectures.
- Architect end-to-end digital thread solutions, connecting CAD/CAM data preparation pipelines, machine control software, factory floor MES/ERP integrations, and fleet telemetry.
- Lead technical trade-off analyses and prototyping efforts, evaluating emerging technologies, frameworks, and third-party tools to solve novel manufacturing challenges.
- Mentor and guide software, firmware, and automation engineers, conducting design reviews and fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous innovation.
- Serve as the structured feedback channel to leadership, communicating technical risks, architectural dependencies, and resource needs clearly and proactively.
- Define strategies for system reliability, fault tolerance, and security, ensuring production machines meet strict uptime, safety, and IP protection standards in customer facilities.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to streamline NPI (New Product Introduction), accelerating the cycle from software build to machine deployment and factory ramp., * Routinely required to sit; walk; talk; hear; use hands to type, handle, and feel; stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, reach, and stretch. Routinely required to move around the facility and lab/factory floor.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
- May require travel (domestic and/or international) dependent on business needs, up to 15%.
- Specific vision abilities that may be required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field; equivalent technical experience will be considered.
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, with 3+ years operating in a System Architect, Principal Engineer, or Lead Software Architect role developing complex, multi-layered software systems.
- Proven track record of designing software for physical hardware systems (e.g., additive manufacturing, industrial automation, robotics, semiconductor equipment, or advanced electronics manufacturing).
- Deep proficiency in modern programming languages, such as C++, Rust, Python, C#, or Go, with a strong grasp of object-oriented, functional, and event-driven architectural paradigms.
- Hands-on experience with real-time systems, edge computing, motion control, or high-rate sensor data ingestion and processing.
- Comfort operating at executive and technical levels-equally credible presenting a high-level system architecture to leadership and diving deep into code, stack traces, or hardware comms protocols with developers.
- Exceptional responsiveness and written/verbal communication skills; able to distill complex technical architecture into clear actionable guidance.
- Strong planning and organizational skills, with the discipline to manage architectural runway and technical debt alongside aggressive product delivery schedules.
- Willingness to get hands dirty-spend time on the lab floor, debug on physical hardware, build proof-of-concepts, and do whatever the engineering team needs to succeed.
- Ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-moving environment where processes and infrastructure are actively scaling.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Direct experience with additive manufacturing, CNC, path planning, slicing algorithms, or G-code generation tools.
- Familiarity with physics-based modeling, closed-loop feedback controls, or computer vision integrated into real-time manufacturing processes.
- Bachelor's Degree, Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or Engineering.
