Reporting to the Bayer Digital Farming (DFS) Head of Engineering, the Sr. Director, Backend Engineering Home Lead is responsible for delivering Engineering operational excellence in support of the DFS business strategy through strategic leadership for the Backend Engineering community, establishing backend standards, developing talent, and strengthening organizational capabilities. You will partner across leadership teams to align technology investments and delivery priorities while enabling the successful delivery of scalable, secure, and reliable backend services across the FieldView ecosystem., * Lead the Backend Engineering Technical Community, driving talent development, workforce planning, and engineering capability growth.
- Develop engineering talent through coaching, career development, succession planning, and leadership pipeline growth.
- Champion a culture of trust, accountability, inclusion, and continuous learning that empowers employees to grow and deliver impact.
- Lead the definition and adoption of backend engineering standards, development practices, and architectural principles that drive engineering excellence and operational reliability.
- Shape the strategic direction of backend technologies and platforms, including APIs, microservices, cloud-native architectures, and data integration capabilities.
- Align engineering talent and capabilities with business priorities to maximize organizational impact and value delivery.
- Lead nearshore and contractor sourcing strategies to optimize engineering capacity, delivery outcomes, and cost effectiveness.
- Serve as a member of the Engineering Leadership Team, influencing strategy, operating models, investments, and execution.
- Drive adoption of AI, automation, and modern engineering practices to improve productivity, accelerate delivery, and enhance organizational effectiveness.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives and partnerships that advance delivery excellence, engineering metrics, planning effectiveness, and business outcomes.
Requirements
- 15+ years of software engineering leadership experience in large-scale technology organizations.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent experience.
- Experience leading managers, senior technical leaders, and globally distributed engineering teams.
- Success building and scaling engineering organizations and technical communities.
- Strong leadership, coaching, and talent development capabilities.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to align business, technology, and organizational needs.
- Ability to influence and align cross-functional stakeholders.
- Experience leading organizational transformation and technology modernization initiatives.
- Deep expertise in backend engineering, including APIs, microservices, cloud-native architectures, and distributed systems.
- Strong knowledge of Agile, DevOps, and modern software delivery practices.
- Strong financial and operational acumen, including budgeting, workforce planning, and vendor management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, and listening skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner
Benefits & conditions
Employees can expect to be paid a salary of approximately $177k-266k. Additional compensation may include a bonus or incentive program (if relevant). Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc..
