Job description

Visionary Broadband seeks a qualified individual to fill the role of GIS Technician. This full-time, hourly position will join the GIS Team at Visionary Broadband, one of the top service providers in the region. The position can be remote (based in Colorado, Wyoming or Montana) or based out of Visionary's Gillette, Sheridan, Gunnison, Denver, Cheynne, or Casper offices.

  • As the GIS Technician, you will work closely with multiple teams within Visionary Broadband to obtain, analyze, and utilize GIS data on telecommunications projects ranging from fiber builds to radio frequency propagation and business case studies. Your main focus will be the integration and vetting of GIS data from multiple platforms. You'll also build and maintain FME workspaces that make data analysis tasks repeatable. Visionary is primarily a QGIS and FME based environment.
  • A candidate will benefit from an understanding of, and experience with, telecom OSP principles and procedures, primarily in a fiber and fixed wireless-based environment. A strong candidate will be familiar with API calls.
  • Reports to: Director of GIS Duties and Responsibilities: Compile and analyze State, County, Federal, local-level, and internal datasets. Work with the Fiber team to maintain accurate plant maps and data. Work with Sales and Marketing to identify prospective customers for fiber and wireless services and to ingest data collected via mobile apps into the GIS. Coordinate with Visionary's Regulatory Team on various state and federal regulatory reporting requirements. QC and improve company data sets. Use analytic techniques to evaluate the quality and completeness of data integrated into the GIS and/or presented to the company. Ensure that the data is as accurate as reasonably possible to facilitate sound business decisions and reporting. Strictly follow company and GIS team standards and protocols in all tasks to ensure consistency, understanding and collaboration. Assist in the development and refinement of standards and protocols and document them in the company knowledge base. Promote GIS adoption throughout the company and facilitate access to data through the GIS platform. Train and support company personnel on GIS software and tools.

Requirements

A qualified candidate must possess the following skills, or have equivalent experience and/or qualifications:

  • College level GIS coursework.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Excellent organizational skills and must be detail oriented.

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with demonstrated problem-solving abilities, including the ability to envision system needs from business user interactions.

  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, as well as ability to quickly learn and work within proprietary computer applications.

Desired Skills:

Experience with FME from Safe Software.

Experience building and maintaining web maps on open-source platforms.

Working knowledge of open-source platforms and tools such as QGIS, GeoServer, GeoNode, and OpenLayers.

Familiarity with VETRO FiberMap, Cloud-RF, HubSpot, Sonar, Monday, or MerginMaps applications preferred, but not essential.
