Job description

Fairlane Products, a well-established manufacturing and distribution company, is looking for a Business Systems Manager to own the systems, data, and processes that run the operation - our ERP, business databases, and the applications that connect sales, inventory, purchasing, and production.

This is a business role with technical range, not a technical role that happens to touch business systems. We need someone who has actually worked inside manufacturing, distribution, or accounting operations - not someone who has only supported those functions from an IT seat - and who can pair that hands-on experience with enough technical capability to configure, troubleshoot, and improve the systems we run on.

We already have a managed services vendor for networking, infrastructure, and hardware; a VAR for deep ERP technical support; and an in-house developer for larger software projects. This role exists to be the person in the middle - someone with enough real operational know-how to understand what the business actually needs, and enough technical range to handle the day-to-day without escalating every request.

The Qualification We Can't Compromise On

Substantial, well-rounded, hands-on experience working across manufacturing, distribution, ecommerce, and accounting operations for a small-to-midsize business - order processing, inventory, purchasing, production scheduling, month-end close, and the dozens of edge cases that only come up once or twice a year. This kind of judgment can't be picked up quickly, and it's the foundation everything else in this role is built on.

Candidates whose entire background is in IT (like help desk, network administration, cybersecurity, or software development) without direct, hands-on operational experience will not be a good fit for this role, regardless of technical skill level.

What You'll Do

ERP & Business Systems (SYSPRO)

  • Understand how modules connect end to end, well enough to troubleshoot issues across order-to-cash, procure-to-pay, inventory, and production
  • Explore the features, capabilities and tools included in the software and use them to automate, streamline, and improve processes and work flows
  • Set up new users and configure security/roles
  • Use SYSPRO's built-in tools to build dashboards & reports, reorganize screen layouts and add custom fields
  • Install and update SYSPRO on workstations
  • Our VAR handles deeper technical customization, upgrades, and complex configuration.

Databases (MS SQL Server)

  • Write SQL queries for reporting
  • Write update queries for pricing adjustments and other bulk data changes
  • Handle routine database backups and cross-server data exports/imports
  • Our developer handles complex database work and larger application projects.

eCommerce (nopCommerce)

  • Export data from SYSPRO, reformat it, and import it into nopCommerce
  • Perform platform configurations and install plugins
  • Understand how orders flow back & forth between eCommerce and ERP
  • Design integration and process solutions to enhance customer and user experience
  • Get involved with SEO and marketing to maximize our online presence
  • Ensure availability and security of online resources

Light Development & Projects (in-house software)

  • Make simple modifications to HTML, JavaScript or VBScript
  • Use AI coding assistants (e.g., Claude) to make modifications and enhancements to our internal software tools
  • Understand the software development lifecycle and basic project management

Core Infrastructure (Windows AD)

  • Create a new Active Directory user
  • Troubleshoot a basic DNS issue
  • Fix a jammed barcode printer or scanner
  • Manage Hyper-V servers: export, import, configuration, and deploying new VMs
  • Manage our Veeam backup plan, off-site storage and verify recoverability
  • Our managed services vendor handles deeper networking, infrastructure, and hardware support.

Requirements

Must-haves:

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience working within (non-automotive) manufacturing, distribution, or accounting operations - you've done the work yourself, not just supported the systems behind it
  • Practical, working-level experience using SYSPRO or a comparable ERP as an actual business user or administrator
  • Experience with nopCommerce or another eCommerce platform (like BigCommerce or Shopify)
  • Comfortable writing SQL queries and handling routine database tasks
  • Some working exposure to Active Directory, DNS, Hyper-V/virtualization, and backup management
  • Some exposure to HTML/JavaScript/VBScript, and comfort using AI tools to assist with technical tasks
  • Strong troubleshooting instincts and the judgment to know what to handle yourself versus when to loop in a vendor
  • Local to the Metro Detroit area (this is not a remote or hybrid role)
  • Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, or a related field - real-world operational experience is weighted far more heavily

This Role Is Not

  • A network administrator, systems engineer, or cybersecurity role
  • A help-desk or end-user technical support role
  • A full-stack development role (light scripting and HTML/JS/VB edits are part of the job, but this is not a developer position)
  • An entry point for candidates whose entire career has been in IT without direct, hands-on manufacturing, distribution, or accounting experience
