Job description
We are seeking a Designer/Architect to serve as the technical and design authority on our development projects. . This role suits someone who wants to combine architectural expertise with project management responsibilities within a development company - rather than a traditional architecture firm. It's a genuine opportunity to grow across both disciplines, deepening design skills while building project management experience in budgeting, scheduling, and delivery.
You will act as the owner's representative on design matters - coordinating and overseeing the work of external architecture and engineering firms, ensuring design intent aligns with project pro formas, and driving projects through entitlement, permitting, and construction. The job may include travel as needed for projects (e.g. 5-10%), * Collaborate with the Director of Design & Construction on assigned projects, from feasibility and concept design through construction documents
- Review and critique deliverables from external architects, engineers, and consultants for design quality, code compliance, and constructability
- Ensure designs align with the company's brand standards, unit mix, and financial targets
- Provide in-house architectural expertise on zoning, building codes, accessibility (ADA), and life-safety requirements
- Identify design-driven cost or schedule risks early and propose solutions
- Assist in the selection of outside design and engineering teams including reviewing contracts and providing feedback and recommendations
- Track and report project status, risks, and key decisions to senior leadership
- Coordinate with internal acquisitions, construction, and finance teams to keep projects aligned with overall business objectives
- Coordinate the entitlement and permitting process, including submissions to planning and building departments
- Attend public hearings, design review boards, and community meetings as needed
- Maintain relationships with municipal agencies, plan reviewers, and inspectors
- Provide design guidance during construction, including responding to RFIs and reviewing submittals
- Conduct site visits to confirm work aligns with design intent and quality standards
- Support value-engineering discussions while protecting core design and functional requirements
Requirements
- Bachelor's or degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, Historic Preservation, or a related field
- 3-5 years of experience in Architecture with exposure to design and project management responsibilities
- Strong working knowledge of building codes, zoning ordinances, and entitlement processes
- Proficiency in design and documentation software (e.g., Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate design concepts for non-technical stakeholders
Preferred
- Licensed Architect (or actively pursuing licensure with significant progress toward completion)
- Familiarity with construction budgeting, project scheduling software (e.g., MS Project, Procore, Smartsheet), and financial pro formas
- Familiarity with advanced design and documentation software (e.g. Revit, Sketchup, etc.)
- Experience managing multiple consultants and contractors simultaneously
