Job description

The Senior Infra Engineer will hold accountability for design, implementation, security, maintenance and support of software-defined infrastructure resources. They will work without the need for supervision and own and direct the tasks of more junior infra engineers. The OpenShift on Z / z/Linux Engineer will provide specialist technical capability to support, engineer and enhance the z/Linux estate running on OpenShift on IBM Z (OCPz), IBM Z (z/VM) and associated x86 Linux environments. The role focuses on run-the-bank stability, product currency, engineering change and project delivery, ensuring highly available and secure Linux services that underpin critical business workloads.

What you'll be doing

  • Act as a technical specialist for OpenShift on Z (OCPz), supporting platform stability, engineering change and ongoing enhancement.
  • Provide BAU support for the z/Linux estate, including incident, problem and change activity across development, test and production environments.
  • Build, configure and maintain RHEL based z/Linux virtual guests running on IBM Z under z/VM.
  • Deliver product currency and security remediation across both OpenShift and Linux platforms, including upgrades, patching and vulnerability remediation in line with enterprise standards.
  • Support engineering and project activity, including OCPz platform improvements, infrastructure upgrades and service improvements.
  • Work closely with adjacent platform teams (z/OS, storage, network, security and application teams) to deliver integrated outcomes.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation, build guides and operational runbooks for both OCPz and Linux platforms.
  • Participate in on call or out of hours support as required by the service.

Requirements

  • Strong hands-on experience with Openshift / container platforms, ideally OpenShift on IBM Z (OCPz).
  • Experience working in enterprise production environments with high availability and regulatory requirements.
  • Good working knowledge of Linux, ideally RHEL on s390x architecture.
  • Good understanding of z/VM, virtual guest provisioning and Linux system administration.
  • Proven experience with OS patching, upgrades and vulnerability management.
  • Familiarity with incident, problem and change management in a controlled environment.
  • Ability to work independently while integrating effectively within an established platform team

And any experience of these would be great

  • Deep experience with OpenShift platform engineering and cluster lifecycle management.
  • Experience with automation tooling such as Ansible and Red Hat Satellite.
  • Knowledge of mainframe-adjacent technologies and enterprise DevOps tooling.
