Job description
Are you passionate about industrial automation, secure software engineering, and cutting-edge automation technologies? We're seeking a dynamic Team Lead to drive both the field-level protection software (SIPROTEC / DIGSI) and the automation technology frameworks for OT devices such as Beckhoff TwinCAT.
You'll balance developing your engineering team with setting the technical strategy and vision for both field-level solutions (SIPROTEC / DIGSI) and automation technologies (primarily Beckhoff TwinCAT). Both areas rely on in-house software development - from compiler and deployment tool-chains to simulation and emulation at field level - so a solid software-engineering foundation underpins everything the team does. You'll lead a multidisciplinary group building scalable, high-performance solutions for HVDC, FACTS, and broader industrial control systems, while creating development momentum and keeping the team aligned with the broader engineering strategy.
How You'll Make an Impact
- Lead, mentor, and grow a multidisciplinary team of software, automation, and electrical engineers, fostering a collaborative and high-performing culture.
- Define and drive the technical strategy for automation technologies (Beckhoff TwinCAT, Simulink, IoT protocols) and field-level protection software (SIPROTEC / DIGSI) in alignment with the Grid Flow Platform roadmap.
- Drive the development of in-house tooling for Beckhoff automation and self-written simulation and emulation environments at field level, implement transformation workflows using Embedded Coder, Simulink Coder, and MATLAB Coder and ensure secure coding practices across all development stages
- Ensure high engineering standards through clean code, maintainable architectures, secure development practices, and modern software engineering methodologies.
- Drive innovation in automation tooling, virtual commissioning, digital twins, and DevSecOps, while continuously improving development processes and delivery efficiency.
- Manage team capacity, recruitment, performance development, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure successful project execution and business continuity.
Requirements
- Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in a leadership or team-management capacity, guiding technical development teams - ideally within the energy or grid-technology sector.
- Strong software-development background, with a genuine eye for clean code, maintainable architecture, and modern engineering practices - the team builds significant self-written tooling, simulation, and emulation software.
- Strong technical expertise in control systems, embedded systems and firmware development, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) and Beckhoff TwinCAT and PLC programming; familiarity with SIPROTEC / DIGSI and protection engineering is a plus
- Hands-on experience with Embedded Coder, Simulink Coder, and MATLAB Coder and familiarity with real-time simulation platforms (e.g., dSPACE, OPAL-RT).
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills, combined with fluency in German and English and a passion for driving innovation.
