Job description
The Tooling team builds the tools, pipelines, and infrastructure that speed up iteration and give us confidence our software works properly before it reaches physical robots. We own the build, release, and continuous integration infrastructure that powers robotics software across core OS, motion, AI, embedded systems, cloud services, apps, and simulation.
As our engineering organization scales, this team is critical to reducing developer friction, increasing release quality, and enabling rapid deployment of software to both simulation environments and physical robots.
Your Charter
Own and scale the automated build and release infrastructure that powers software development across 1X. You will design highly reliable CI/CD systems, optimize build performance, improve release automation, and establish engineering workflows that enable teams to ship software safely and efficiently across robotics, cloud, embedded, and simulation platforms.
Key Outcomes
- Design and scale automated build and release pipelines that support rapid software delivery across the entire software stack (embedded to cloud).
- Improve build reliability, build performance, and deployment efficiency while reducing engineering downtime and release risk.
- Develop automated testing, artifact management, versioning, and release validation systems that ensure software quality before deployment.
- Partner with all software teams to standardize development workflows and improve engineering productivity.
- Establish scalable developer infrastructure, release governance, and CI/CD best practices that support the continued growth of 1X's engineering organization.
Requirements
- Deep expertise building large-scale CI/CD, build automation, and release engineering systems.
- Strong systems thinking with experience designing reliable developer infrastructure for complex software environments.
- Excellent software engineering skills with a focus on automation, scalability, and operational excellence.
- Strong understanding of software release lifecycle management across multiple platforms and engineering teams.
- Ability to lead technical initiatives and drive engineering productivity in a fast-paced startup environment., * 6+ years of professional experience (Senior) or 10+ years (Staff) in Build Engineering, Release Engineering, Developer Infrastructure, DevOps, or Platform Engineering.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Strong programming experience in Python, Go, Bash, or similar scripting and automation languages.
- Hands-on experience building and maintaining CI/CD systems using tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Buildkite, Bazel, Buck2, CMake, or similar build systems.
- Experience supporting Linux-based development environments and distributed software engineering teams.
Preferred Skills
- Experience supporting robotics, embedded systems, autonomous vehicles, games, or other large-scale software platforms.
- Familiarity with cross-platform build systems, embedded firmware builds, or multi-language monorepos.
- Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience managing artifact repositories, package management, release orchestration, and deployment automation.
- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Experience optimizing build performance, distributed compilation, caching strategies, or large-scale developer tooling.
