Job description

The Tooling team builds the tools, pipelines, and infrastructure that speed up iteration and give us confidence our software works properly before it reaches physical robots. This team focuses on eliminating developer friction by improving CI/CD performance, optimizing build infrastructure, and creating scalable automation that allows engineers to spend more time building robots and less time waiting for pipelines.

As our engineering organization scales, this team is critical to reducing developer friction, increasing release quality, and enabling rapid deployment of software to both simulation environments and physical robots.

Your Charter

Drive the performance, scalability, and reliability of 1X's CI/CD platform. You will optimize engineering workflows, reduce build and test latency, improve developer feedback loops, and build the infrastructure that enables hundreds of engineers to continuously deliver high-quality software across robotics and cloud platforms.

Key Outcomes

  • Improve CI/CD performance by reducing build, test, and deployment times across the engineering organization.
  • Design scalable automation that maximizes developer productivity while maintaining software quality and release reliability.
  • Optimize distributed build systems, caching strategies, test execution, and resource utilization to improve engineering efficiency.
  • Partner with all software teams to streamline development workflows and reduce operational bottlenecks.
  • Establish engineering standards, tooling, and observability that provide actionable insights into CI/CD health, pipeline performance, and developer experience.

Requirements

  • Deep expertise designing and optimizing CI/CD infrastructure for large-scale software engineering organizations.
  • Strong understanding of distributed build systems, pipeline optimization, test automation, and developer productivity.
  • Excellent software engineering skills with experience building scalable automation and infrastructure tooling.
  • Strong systems thinking with a passion for improving engineering efficiency through automation and platform improvements.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional technical initiatives and influence engineering best practices across multiple organizations., * 6+ years of professional experience (Senior) or 10+ years (Staff) in Build Engineering, Developer Productivity, DevOps, Infrastructure Engineering, or Platform Engineering.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Strong programming experience in Python, Go, Bash, or similar automation languages.
  • Hands-on experience building and optimizing CI/CD systems using tools such as GitHub Actions, Buildkite, Jenkins, GitLab CI, CircleCI, Bazel, Buck2, CMake, or similar technologies.
  • Experience supporting Linux development environments and large-scale software engineering workflows.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience optimizing monorepos, distributed compilation, remote execution, and build caching technologies.
  • Experience building internal developer platforms or developer productivity tooling.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes, Docker, and cloud infrastructure platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Experience with automated test infrastructure, parallel test execution, and engineering metrics.
  • Experience supporting robotics, autonomous systems, embedded software, gaming, or other performance-sensitive engineering organizations.
  • Experience implementing observability, monitoring, and analytics for CI/CD systems and developer workflows.

About the company

We're building humanoid robots that work in home - doing the chores, handling the tasks, and giving people their time back. Simple, but it's not. To do this right, we have to solve robotics, AI, manufacturing - at the same time, at scale, in a form factor that has to be safe enough to live with your family. If you're inspired by this, you'll thrive here. We've been at this since 2014 and we're at the point where the hard problems are behind us and the hard work is in front of us. NEO is our flagship - a home robot designed to move, learn, and operate in the real world alongside real people. We're not demoing it - we're shipping it. We're excited to meet you, if this excites you. If you've spent your career working on problems that matter and want to see them actually reach the world - this is that moment. We're scaling, we're hiring with intention, and we need people who want to build something that will genuinely change how humans spend their time - safely creating abundance for all.
