Job description

We are seeking a proactive and technically skilled Data Centre & Infrastructure Technician to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will be responsible for building, maintaining, installing, and troubleshooting critical data centre infrastructure and networking systems. Your expertise will ensure seamless network operations, optimal equipment performance, and reliable communication services across our facilities. Server Assembly and Deployment

  • Assemble GPU and compute servers from individual components, including chassis, motherboards, CPUs, memory, GPUs, storage, power supplies, cooling systems and networking hardware.
  • Check component compatibility and identify potential build or performance issues.
  • Configure BIOS, firmware and hardware settings in accordance with agreed standards.
  • Rack, cable and commission servers and related equipment at head office and data centre sites.
  • Install power and network connections neatly, safely and accurately.
  • Test completed systems for stability, temperature, power consumption and performance.
  • Maintain accurate build, configuration, asset and warranty records.

Hardware Maintenance and Fault-Finding

  • Diagnose hardware, performance, thermal, power and connectivity faults.
  • Replace failed components and complete server upgrades with minimal disruption.
  • Carry out planned inspections, cleaning and preventative maintenance.
  • Monitor hardware health and respond to alerts or emerging issues.
  • Manage spare parts and help maintain appropriate stock levels.
  • Work with suppliers and manufacturers to resolve faults and warranty claims.
  • Support occasional planned maintenance outside normal working hours where required.

Infrastructure and Virtualisation

  • Install and administer Linux-based systems, primarily Ubuntu and Debian.
  • Deploy and maintain Proxmox hosts, clusters, virtual machines and templates.
  • Configure and troubleshoot GPU passthrough and related virtualisation requirements.
  • Support storage environments using technologies such as ZFS, LVM, NVMe and RAID.
  • Apply operating system, driver, firmware and security updates.
  • Use scripts and automation tools where they provide a practical improvement to deployment or maintenance.

Networking and Monitoring

  • Install and troubleshoot high-speed network connections, switches and related equipment.
  • Support VLANs, routing, firewalls, VPNs and secure remote access.
  • Diagnose network performance and connectivity problems.
  • Maintain infrastructure monitoring, logging and alerting systems.
  • Escalate security, availability and capacity concerns promptly.

Infrastructure Design and Improvement

  • Contribute practical technical input to infrastructure planning and design discussions.
  • Advise on component selection, compatibility, rack layouts, cabling, power, cooling and maintainability.
  • Implement infrastructure changes and designs agreed with the Head of Technology.
  • Test and benchmark new GPUs, server components and supporting technologies.
  • Suggest improvements that increase reliability, efficiency, safety or ease of maintenance.
  • Assist with capacity planning and future infrastructure requirements.

Technical and Customer Support

  • Investigate infrastructure-related issues affecting internal users and customers.
  • Support escalated problems involving physical servers, virtual machines, storage, performance or connectivity.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally when providing updates or explaining technical issues.
  • Document recurring problems, resolutions and standard procedures.
  • Assist with customer onboarding and technical walkthroughs where required.

Security, Documentation and Compliance

  • Follow the company's information security, access control and data-handling procedures.
  • Help implement and maintain technical controls supporting ISO 27001 compliance.
  • Maintain accurate records of infrastructure changes, maintenance, incidents and access.
  • Follow appropriate physical security and safe-working practices at data centre sites.
  • Support audits by providing clear and accurate technical documentation.

Requirements

  • Strong practical experience assembling, upgrading and repairing servers, workstations or similar hardware.
  • Good understanding of server components, compatibility, cooling, power and fault diagnosis.
  • Experience administering Linux systems.
  • Experience with virtualisation platforms such as Proxmox, VMware, Hyper-V or similar.
  • Working knowledge of storage technologies such as ZFS, LVM, NVMe and RAID.
  • Sound networking knowledge, including IP addressing, VLANs, routing and firewalls.
  • Methodical troubleshooting skills across hardware, operating systems and networks.
  • Ability to maintain clear and accurate technical records.
  • Good communication skills and a willingness to support colleagues and customers.
  • Ability to commute to the Bury office and data centre sites - company vehicle available when travelling to client sites.
  • Must possess a clean manual driving licence

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Experience building or maintaining multi-GPU servers.
  • Experience with Proxmox clustering, VM templates and GPU passthrough.
  • Familiarity with NVIDIA GPUs, drivers and diagnostic tools.
  • Experience with 10-100 Gbps networking.
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools such as Zabbix, Prometheus or Grafana.
  • Basic scripting or automation experience using Bash, Python, Ansible or similar.
  • Experience working in a data centre or high-performance computing environment.
  • Awareness of ISO 27001 or other information security standards.
  • Previous experience providing technical support in a business-to-business environment.

Pay: £35,000.00-£40,000.00 per year
