Job description

Essential Job Duties Reporting to the Director of Information Management, the Data Analyst is responsible for designing, maintaining, and enhancing data infrastructures that support graduate-level reporting and analytics across the university. This role integrates data from multiple complex sources-including Student, HR, and Finance systems-to fulfill routine and ad-hoc reporting needs. The Data Analyst collaborates with departments across campus to define information requirements, develop accurate and timely reporting solutions, and ensure a high standard of data integrity. The position also partners with IT teams to update, maintain, or replace outdated information systems and reporting tools, including dashboards, metrics, and other analytics products.

The role requires strong knowledge of normalized databases, advanced Excel analysis, and working proficiency with data visualization tools. Other Responsibilities Key Responsibilities of the Data Analyst include, but are not limited to: Data Infrastructure Development & Reporting

  • Design, build, and maintain data infrastructure to streamline routine and ad-hoc reporting for graduate education.
  • Create complex datasets and reports to meet stakeholder needs (e.g., graduate admissions, enrollment, and trend analyses).
  • Utilize university information systems to produce analytics and metrics supporting university-wide stakeholders.
  • Support front-end development efforts that enhance data accessibility, including contributing to web pages and applications using PHP, WordPress, or related tools.

Data Integrity, Documentation & Quality Assurance

  • Establish and maintain comprehensive documentation of data infrastructure, including data dictionaries, ETL documentation, and workflow records.
  • Conduct regular audits to ensure data accuracy and integrity.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot data issues proactively.

Cross-Campus Collaboration & Data Support

  • Work with Graduate School leadership and central offices (OIT, ISA, EMAS, etc.) to support strategic initiatives and operational needs.
  • Provide data extracts, queries, and custom reports for internal and external requests (e.g., self-assessment data, NSF surveys).
  • Assist departments and campus partners with individual data needs, both routine and ad-hoc.
  • Participate in efforts to update or replace outdated datasets, webpages, jobs, and reporting tools.

Continuous Improvement & Professional Development

  • Continually develop data management, analytics, and information technology skills to enhance organizational effectiveness.
  • Participate in relevant training, conferences, and courses (e.g., Conferences, Certifications and Workshops on Data and Visualization concepts and tools).
  • Contribute to ongoing improvements in university data infrastructure and reporting processes within graduate education.
  • Use tools like Query Analyzer to analyze query performance and incorporate necessary enhancements to SQL queries.

Requirements

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master's degree; or Bachelor's degree preferably in Computer Science or Business Analytics with zero - two years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience.
  • For management-level roles, also include with the above requirements 1-2 years of supervisory experience. Other Required Qualifications
  • Experience with writing and executing SQL queries.
  • Experience with Predictive Analytics using Python and SAS.
  • Good understanding of normalized and relational databases.
  • Excel data analysis and reporting functionalities.
  • Experience with Pivot Tables and Power Queries within Excel
  • Working knowledge of visual analytics and report creation using visualization tools like Power BI and SAS VA.
  • Experience with data manipulation and warehousing tools like SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), SAS DI Studio and Power Automate.
  • Experience with scheduling of jobs within Windows and SQL Server.
  • Experience with advanced tools like Query Analyzer and SQL Server Management Studio.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with SAS language, Oracle SQL, Power BI, SSIS, Python and Oracle PeopleSoft Query Manager.
  • Certification in Database or Analytics.
  • Some understanding of front end development technologies like PHP and WordPress.
