Job description
We're looking for a Senior Full Stack Engineer to join our team building the next generation of our customer-facing application. You'll work across the entire stack, from React Server Components and infinite scroll virtualization to API design and database schema, shipping features that directly impact how families experience their most treasured memories.
This isn't a role where you'll work on one small piece of a massive system. You'll own features end-to-end, make architectural decisions, and see your work go live to thousands of users every week.
What You'll Build
Media Management & Viewing
- Rich media experiences for photos, videos, and audio with smooth playback and beautiful presentation
- Infinite scroll through 10,000+ items with virtualization and smart caching
- Advanced search and filtering with real-time results
- Collections and favorites for organizing memories
Order Tracking & Account Management
- Deep-linked order tracking integrated with Shopify and fulfillment systems
- Real-time status updates and shipping notifications
- Account dashboards with subscription management
AI-Powered Features
- Automatic media tagging and categorization using computer vision
- Semantic search for finding memories by content, not just metadata
- AI-generated descriptions and captions
- Customer support automation and chatbots
Digital Transformation
- Modernizing legacy systems with incremental migration strategies
- Building bridges between e-commerce, fulfillment, and customer app
- Creating adapters for legacy APIs while designing clean new interfaces
Technical Challenges You'll Solve
These are real problems from our current roadmap:
- Infinite Scroll Virtualization - Rendering and navigating 10,000+ media items smoothly with prefetching and aggressive caching strategies
- Media Optimization - Integrating CDN transformations (resize, crop, format conversion) with responsive image loading and progressive enhancement
- Real-Time Order Tracking - Deep-linked order status updates with timeline visualization, integrated across Shopify, fulfillment systems, and customer app
- Optimistic Updates - Instant UI feedback for favorites, collections, and tags with automatic rollback on API errors
- AI-Powered Media Tagging - Automatic categorization of photos and videos using computer vision APIs with human-in-the-loop refinement
- Semantic Search - Natural language queries over media content, not just metadata
- Legacy API Migration - Building clean adapters for legacy systems while designing modern replacement APIs
- Performance Budgets - Maintaining <2.5s LCP and <100KB JS bundles on media-heavy pages
- Accessibility Excellence - Full keyboard navigation, screen reader support, and WCAG 2.1 AA compliance across complex media interfaces
- Feature Flags & Experimentation - Safe progressive rollouts with PostHog integration and override mechanisms for testing
What You'll DoFeature Development (60%)
- Design and implement new features from concept to production
- Build responsive, accessible UI components with pixel-perfect attention to detail
- Create efficient API endpoints with proper caching and error handling
- Write database migrations and optimize query performance
- Implement complex interactions (drag-and-drop, keyboard shortcuts, gesture support)
System Design & Architecture (5-20%)
- Make architectural decisions for new features and system improvements
- Design database schemas and API contracts
- Evaluate and integrate new technologies (AI/LLM APIs, CDN services, etc.)
- Plan incremental migrations from legacy systems
- Balance technical debt with feature velocity
Quality & Maintenance (5-20%)
- Write comprehensive tests (unit, integration, E2E)
- Review code and mentor teammates
- Debug production issues and implement fixes
- Monitor performance and optimize bottlenecks
- Maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines
Collaboration (5-20%)
- Work with product and design to refine requirements
- Communicate progress and blockers clearly
- Document complex systems for future maintainers
- Participate in technical planning and roadmap discussions
Requirements

- SQL databases - Schema design, queries, migrations
- Testing - Unit, integration, and E2E testing practices
- Responsive design - Mobile-first development
- Accessibility - WCAG 2.1 AA compliance
- Git workflows and code review practices
Strong Plus
- TanStack Query (React Query) for complex data fetching patterns
- Drizzle ORM or similar type-safe ORM
- Media-heavy applications - Video, audio, or image management
- Virtualization - Handling large lists efficiently
- Performance optimization - Web Vitals, bundle size, caching strategies
- CDN integration - ImageKit, Cloudinary, or similar

- High-traffic applications - 10K+ concurrent users
- Video/audio processing - FFmpeg, transcoding, etc.
- Open source contributions or technical writing
- Side projects showcasing technical depth

Why Join Us
Legacybox is at an exciting inflection point, transforming from a one-time digitization service into a lifelong platform for preserving and sharing family stories. As a software engineer, you'll shape how millions of families relive their memories.
Work Environment
We embrace a flexible approach to work. Many of our team members are fully remote, and we value results, communication, and craftsmanship above location. We also take great pride in our hometown of Chattanooga and our multiple facilities there: our downtown office and our digitization facility, where thousands of family memories are carefully handled and converted every day. Whether working from home or visiting in person, you'll be part of a team deeply rooted to a sense of place, and committed to quality and care. You're always welcome in Chattanooga.
Our Development Culture
Quality Over Speed
We ship regularly but not recklessly. Every feature has tests, documentation, and accessibility built in. We take the time to do things right.
Collaboration & Trust
We do code reviews that teach and improve. We trust each other's expertise. We assume positive intent. We celebrate wins and learn from mistakes together.
Continuous Learning
We experiment with new technologies in side projects before bringing them to production. We share articles, conference talks, and interesting code. We invest in professional development.
