Job description

National Background Check, Inc. and FastFingerprints are seeking an experienced software developer to help support and thoughtfully modernize a portfolio of business-critical applications used in fingerprinting and background-check operations. Our environment combines established desktop and server applications with web applications, APIs, databases, and integrations with customers, vendors, payment providers, and government agencies.

This role is well suited to a developer who enjoys understanding how complex systems actually work, solving problems that cross application boundaries, and improving mature software without assuming that every older component must be rewritten. We value sound judgment, curiosity, reliability, and business understanding as highly as knowledge of any particular framework.

What You Will Do

· Learn the architecture, business processes, dependencies, and operational purpose of an established application portfolio.

· Investigate and resolve production issues across application code, Windows services, APIs, databases, third-party components, and external integrations.

· Design, develop, test, and maintain C#/.NET applications, web applications, RESTful APIs, SQL Server components, and Windows desktop applications.

· Modernize systems incrementally, prioritizing changes that provide measurable improvements in security, reliability, maintainability, performance, or business capability.

· Use sound judgment when deciding whether code should be repaired, refactored, replaced, or left in place.

· Participate in code reviews and contribute constructive recommendations while respecting established technical ownership and institutional knowledge.

· Develop and execute practical test, deployment, verification, and rollback plans for production changes.

· Work with management, developers, operational staff, end users, customers, vendors, consultants, and government-agency partners to understand needs and resolve problems.

· Document systems, design decisions, operating procedures, and lessons learned so knowledge is shared across the team.

· Incorporate security, privacy, and compliance requirements into normal design and development decisions.

· Mentor and learn from other developers through collaborative problem-solving rather than authority based solely on title or tenure., Our development team values thoughtful improvement over change for its own sake. Before proposing a major rewrite, we expect developers to understand what the current system does, why it was built that way, who depends on it, and what risks a replacement would introduce. New ideas and constructive challenges are welcome; decisions should be supported by evidence, business value, and an appropriate assessment of operational risk.

The successful candidate will add technical depth and experience to an existing leadership and continuity structure. The role offers meaningful influence through expertise, execution, mentoring, and good judgment, but it is not intended to replace the Technical Lead or assume management of the development team.

What Success Looks Like

· You become increasingly self-sufficient as you learn the systems and business.

· Your investigations identify underlying causes rather than only treating visible symptoms.

· Your changes are appropriately scoped, tested, documented, and safely deployed.

· You improve the team's technical capability while also learning from its existing knowledge.

· You earn trust through sound decisions, clear communication, reliable execution, and respect for shared ownership.

Requirements

· Analytical problem-solving. You can investigate unfamiliar problems, follow evidence across several components, and reach a well-supported conclusion.

· Independent system analysis. You can learn an existing system through code, databases, logs, documentation, testing, and focused questions without requiring continuous step-by-step direction.

· Pragmatic technical judgment. You distinguish between modernization that creates meaningful value and change driven primarily by a preference for newer technology.

· Systems thinking. You consider how changes may affect upstream and downstream applications, integrations, users, operations, security, and compliance.

· Ownership and follow-through. You carry work from investigation through implementation, testing, deployment, and production verification.

· Stakeholder communication. You communicate clearly with both technical and nontechnical people and can translate between business needs and technical decisions.

· Collaborative maturity. You contribute experience, challenge assumptions respectfully, accept review, and strengthen the team without treating seniority as automatic decision-making authority.

· Long-term perspective. You balance immediate delivery with reliability, maintainability, operational continuity, and the future needs of the business.

Required Qualifications

· Substantial professional software-development experience, typically three or more years, or equivalent evidence of progressively responsible work on complex production systems.

· Strong experience developing and troubleshooting applications in C# and the .NET ecosystem.

· Solid experience with Microsoft SQL Server, including relational design, stored procedures, query analysis, and performance troubleshooting.

· Experience building, maintaining, or integrating RESTful APIs and distributed application components.

· Demonstrated success learning and supporting an existing production system that the candidate did not originally design.

· Experience diagnosing problems that cross application, database, integration, or infrastructure boundaries.

· Ability to explain technical decisions, risks, and tradeoffs to nontechnical stakeholders.

· Evidence of taking work through testing, deployment, and post-deployment verification rather than stopping when coding is complete.

Preferred Technical Experience

No candidate is expected to be an expert in every technology below. Breadth is valuable, but demonstrated learning ability, problem-solving, and judgment are more important than matching every keyword.

· C# across both .NET Framework and modern .NET

· ASP.NET Core, ASP.NET Web API, and RESTful service development

· Angular single-page applications

· ASP.NET Razor Pages

· Windows Forms client-server applications

· Windows Services and background-processing applications

· SQL Server stored procedures, query tuning, and production troubleshooting

· Third-party and machine-to-machine integrations, including secure file or message transfer

· Automated testing, source control, build pipelines, deployment pipelines, and rollback planning

Additional Experience That Would Be Valuable

· Experience in a regulated, security-sensitive, criminal-justice, financial, healthcare, or similarly controlled environment.

· Familiarity with secure software-development practices, encryption, identity and access control, logging, and vulnerability remediation.

· Experience working with external vendors or government-agency technical teams.

· Experience modernizing mature applications through phased, low-risk improvements., This position works within a regulated environment that handles criminal-justice information. Employment is contingent on successful completion of the following:

· An Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) criminal background check.

· An FBI criminal background check, with FBI approval based on the LAR.

· Completion of CJIS Security Awareness Training following hire.

· A passing result on a pre-employment drug screening
