Physicist shaping international tech policy and research strategy at ETH Zurich.

Joël Mesot directs research strategy and policy at ETH Zurich. Before taking on the university’s presidency, he spent decades as a physicist studying quantum materials and high-temperature superconductors across France, the US, and Switzerland.

Much of his earlier career took place at the Swiss Paul Scherrer Institute, where he directed the facility and headed its neutron scattering lab. Today, he connects the tech and science communities with international policymakers to drive progress in fields like artificial intelligence, energy, and space.

He frequently explores how major technical shifts impact society, recently speaking about preparing human capital for an AI-driven economy.
