Job description

Data Engineering & Analytics

  • Design and implement data pipelines (collection, cleaning, transformation, validation).
  • Integrate heterogeneous datasets (climate, environmental, socio-economic, governance data).
  • Ensure data quality, documentation and reproducibility.

AI & Machine Learning

  • Develop and deploy machine learning and AI models (including NLP when relevant).
  • Contribute to explainable and responsible AI approaches.
  • Support the development of AI-assisted decision-support tools (e.g. recommendation systems, conversational interfaces).

Dashboard & Digital Tools Development

  • Contribute to the development of interactive dashboards and visual analytics tools.
  • Work on backend and frontend components in collaboration with designers and developers.
  • Support testing, iteration and deployment of digital tools.

Research & Project Support

  • Assume a leading role in interdisciplinary and international research projects, acting as a Work Package leader for UNDERPIN's AI tasks.
  • Collaborate closely with academic researchers to translate research frameworks into operational tools.
  • Lead the integration of technical documentation, reports, and deliverables (following Horizon Europe procedures).

Requirements

Master Degree or equivalent, * Master's degree or PhD in Data Science, Computer Science, AI, Engineering, Applied Mathematics or related field.

  • 3-5 years of past, work experience (minimum).
  • Strong programming skills in Python.
  • Experience with data science libraries (pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, etc.).
  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g. Plotly, Dash, Streamlit, D3.js).
  • Familiarity with machine learning and/or NLP methods.
  • Excellent communication skills in English at the C2 level (writing, speaking, and reading).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in European (Horizon Europe) or international research and innovation projects is an asset.
  • Experience in applied research and/or research engineering projects.
  • Familiarity with cloud environments and APIs.
  • Experience with sustainability, climate, environmental or policy-related data., The application package can include a sample from previous documents written in English (articles, technical reports), indicating which sections or paragraphs were written by the candidate. We are searching for an experienced research engineer (data scientist) under a fixed-term contract (CDD 18 months), based at our Jouy-en-Josas campus near Paris About the position HEC Paris is recruiting a Data Scientist to support the design, development and deployment of data-driven and AI-based tools related to climate adaptation, resilience, and public policy. The successful candidate will work at the interface between research and engineering, contributing to advanced data analytics, AI models, dashboards and decision-support tools developed within European research projects and institutional initiatives of the Sustainability and Organizations Institute S&O. He/she will extensively collaborate within the HEC Paris TechLab and HI! Paris Institute of AI - where the core of the technical work will be developed. This position is part of the Horizon Europe project UNDERPIN - oUtcome iNDicators to mEasuRe Progress on climate resIlieNce (Grant Agreement 101215153); a project coordinated by Dr. Fernando J. Díaz López, Executive Director of the Climate and Earth Centre of S&O and lead author for the IPCC AR7 report. Day to day interactions with the different project partners will also be established to ensure achieving collective results required by the European grant (IIASA, CMCC, TECNALIA, Climate KIC, adelphi).
