Job description
This is Not a "Same Desk, Same Day" job. You'll be the go-to cover engineer for airport locations and customer sites, stepping in wherever support is needed. You'll learn both environments, build confidence fast, and become the person who can walk into a new site, get the lay of the land quickly, and start making things better from day one.
You'll be home-based, travelling across the North with flexibility to support other UK regions when required.
Why this role is a big opportunity
If you're looking to cut your teeth across a wide spectrum of IT, this is it. You'll get exposure to varied setups, different customer environments, and real-world troubleshooting that levels up your skills quickly-hardware, OS, networks, peripherals, desk-side support, and the realities of busy operational sites (including airports).
What you'll be doing (a snapshot)
- Provide 1st and 2nd line field support across airports and customer sites, acting as backfill/cover where needed.
- Deliver desktop & desk-side support, troubleshooting hardware, OS and standard software issues.
- Install, configure and troubleshoot desktops, laptops, printers and other peripherals.
- Carry out break/fix, add/move/change tasks, and peripheral/device driver support.
- Perform basic administration and support of Operating Systems and common "off the shelf" applications.
- Work confidently in high-pace operational environments, adapting quickly to each site's processes and priorities.
- Manage and complete assigned calls with professionalism, ensuring a great customer experience every time.
- Monitor service calls to ensure quality and SLA goals are met in a timely manner.
- Keep everything tight and accurate: update tickets, document actions, and follow customer/ESP processes.
- Escalate to the appropriate next line when required, providing clear notes and evidence.
Working pattern & flexibility
This role is up to 40 hours per week, but hours and timings may vary depending on where and when backfill is required. That could mean early starts, later finishes, and occasional shift-based coverage-particularly for airport environments that operate 24/7.
You'll need to be comfortable with:
- Working at different locations at short notice
- Flexing your schedule when coverage is required (including days/nights on a 12-hour pattern when needed)
Requirements
Do you have experience in Windows?, * Hands-on ability with installing, upgrading, building, repairing, configuring and troubleshooting end-user devices.
- Up to 2 years' PC and laptop hardware service experience (or equivalent practical experience).
- Solid foundation in desktop support and current Windows operating systems.
- Basic understanding of enterprise networking: LAN/WAN concepts, DNS, DHCP, VPN, RDP.
- Comfortable following detailed scripts/runbooks for more complex tasks (with remote technical support available).
- Strong communication skills-clear, calm, and professional with both customers and colleagues.
- A genuine customer service mindset and pride in doing things properly.
- Able to evidence 5 years UK working/education history (required for airside clearance checks).
Benefits & conditions
- Competitive base salary (dependent on experience)
- Company vehicle + mileage
- On-call allowance (where applicable)
- Pension, life assurance
- Access to ongoing training and career development
- The chance to build a genuinely valuable skillset across multiple environments, from customer offices to mission-critical airport operations
