Job description
You'll join an enterprise SAP team delivering enhancements and integrations across a mature landscape, supporting day-to-day operations while moving the platform forward (including S/4HANA-aligned development standards, cleaner interfaces, improved testing, and performance optimisation).
This role suits someone who enjoys hands-on ABAP development, working closely with functional teams, and delivering changes that directly impact warehouse execution, manufacturing, finance, and reporting., * Design, build and enhance solutions using ABAP and ABAP OO (clean architecture, reusable components, robust error handling).
- Develop and optimise data models: CDS Views, AMDP (where appropriate), performance-aware SQL and buffering strategies.
- Build integration services and APIs using OData, SAP Gateway, RFC/BAPI, and IDoc-based patterns.
- Deliver SAP developments aligned to enterprise standards: naming conventions, transport discipline, documentation, and code reviews.
- Support testing cycles including unit testing, SIT, UAT, regression testing, and performance testing with evidence and traceability.
- Troubleshoot production incidents: debugging, ST22 dumps, SM21 logs, update failures, background job issues, performance bottlenecks.
- Partner with functional consultants to shape technical designs for module enhancements and cross-module processes.
- Produce and maintain technical documentation: specs, interface mappings, operational runbooks, and support notes aligned to audit expectations.
- Participate in release management and controlled deployments (transports, cutover tasks, hypercare support).
Tech stack (what you'll be working with)
This is a modern SAP environment where classic ABAP skills matter but newer standards are valued., The SAP landscape supports regulated, high-volume operational processes, often across:
- MM (procurement, inventory, batch-managed materials)
- SD (order management, delivery, billing, pricing routines)
- PP (production orders, confirmations, BOMs, batch traceability)
- WM/EWM (warehouse processes, picking/packing/shipping)
- FI/CO (postings, reconciliation, month-end support, cost allocations)
- Reporting and analytics feeds to downstream systems
(You don't need deep functional consulting experience, strong collaboration with functional teams is the key.)
What success looks like in the first 3-6 months
- You'll take ownership of core ABAP components and become a trusted point for solution design and production troubleshooting.
- You'll deliver enhancements with strong quality outcomes (lower defects, smoother releases, clearer documentation).
- You'll improve performance and stability in at least one high-usage process (e.g. order-to-cash, warehouse interface, batch trace reporting).
- You'll contribute to the S/4HANA-aligned roadmap by improving interfaces, adopting modern patterns, and reducing technical debt.
Requirements
- ABAP development (reports, interfaces, enhancements, forms, debugging)
- ABAP OO (classes, interfaces, testable design, exception handling)
- SAP development tooling: SE80, ADT/Eclipse (preferred), transport management basics
- Strong Open SQL knowledge and performance awareness
- Integration fundamentals: IDoc, RFC, BAPI, file-based interfaces
- Experience working in structured delivery environments (change control, testing discipline, releases), * S/4HANA exposure (compatibility mindset, simplification impacts, performance considerations)
- CDS Views, OData services, SAP Gateway
- RAP and/or CAP awareness; ABAP Cloud principles
- Forms: SmartForms, Adobe Forms, and output management concepts
- Workflow/automation: SAP Business Workflow, background jobs (SM36/SM37)
- Performance and admin tooling: ST05, SAT, SQLM, SM50/SM66, SM12 locks, SPAU/SPDD
- SAP integration middleware awareness: PI/PO, CPI, BTP Integration Suite
- Security basics: roles/authorisations, audit considerations, secure coding practices, * Strong commercial experience as a SAP ABAP Developer in enterprise SAP environments
- Confidence working with stakeholders to clarify requirements and translate into robust technical designs
- Strong debugging and incident resolution skills with a root-cause mindset
- A quality-led approach: clean code, documentation, transport discipline, and testing evidence
- Comfortable in hybrid delivery teams (internal, partner, and third-party suppliers)
