Job description
The Design Engineer will be responsible for the design and technical assurance of backbone and access communications networks (DWDM, SDH, PDH, MPLS), CCTV and PAVA systems, with a particular focus on Nokia-based telecommunications infrastructure. They will take solutions from concept through detailed design and into construction/as-built, working closely with project, operations and commissioning teams to deliver robust, resilient and compliant systems., * Develop detailed designs for transmission and IP networks including DWDM, SDH, PDH and MPLS-based architectures (core, distribution and access layers).
- Design and document solutions using predominantly Nokia communications equipment (e.g. edge/core routers, switches, SDH/DWDM platforms), including chassis layouts, card population, port allocations and resilience schemes.
- Produce detailed designs for associated CCTV and PAVA systems, ensuring correct network integration, QoS and bandwidth provision.
- Prepare network topologies, IP plans, VLAN schemas, routing designs, clocking/synchronisation schemes and protection mechanisms (e.g. ring, 1+1, MSP).
- Produce drawings, schematics, rack layouts, patching schedules, cable schedules and design calculations to required standards.
- Interpret client requirements, specifications and standards to develop compliant, cost-effective and scalable designs.
- Undertake or review site surveys to validate design assumptions for space, power, environmental and cabling/containment routes.
- Produce design documentation including design reports, equipment lists/BoMs, configuration templates and test/acceptance input.
- Coordinate designs with other disciplines (IT, security, electrical, civil, signalling/building services as applicable).
- Provide technical support to installation and commissioning teams, resolving design queries and supporting factory/site acceptance testing.
- Contribute to design reviews, risk/HAZOP workshops and value-engineering exercises.
- Ensure all designs align with relevant standards, cyber/security requirements and client governance processes.
Requirements
Do you have experience in MPLS?, * Strong experience as a communications / transmission Design Engineer with hands-on exposure to DWDM, SDH, PDH and MPLS networks.
- Proven background designing solutions with Nokia communications platforms (e.g. IP/MPLS routers, switches, optical transport/SDH equipment).
- Good understanding of IP networking (routing, switching, MPLS, QoS, multicast where relevant) and their application to CCTV and PAVA backhaul.
- Experience integrating CCTV and PAVA systems over managed transmission/IP networks including bandwidth and latency considerations.
- Proficiency in preparing network design artefacts: high-level and low-level designs, interface specifications, addressing plans, rack layouts and patch schedules.
- Good working knowledge of resiliency and protection schemes for carrier-grade or mission-critical networks.
- Competent user of CAD tools for drawings and standard office tools for reports, schedules and calculations.
- Ability to work through the full design lifecycle (concept, scheme, detailed, IFC, as-built) on live projects.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Desirable
- Experience in transport, rail, utilities, critical national infrastructure or large campus/public-space environments.
- Familiarity with other vendors' transmission/IP equipment and ability to interface with multi-vendor environments.
- Understanding of cyber-security principles for operational networks, including segregation and remote access controls.
- Knowledge of related systems such as access control, intrusion detection, help points and passenger/public information systems.
- Relevant engineering qualification (HNC/HND or degree) in Telecommunications, Electrical/Electronic Engineering or similar.
- Professional membership or working towards (e.g. IET) and relevant vendor certifications (e.g. Nokia network certifications).
