We create the technical specifications used by HE providers, transform raw data into enhanced datasets for products likeHeidi Plus , and supply statutory customers with the evidence they need for policy and decision making.About the Team:The Official Statistics team produces Jisc's official statistics publications on UK higher education topics, including students and graduate outcomes, finances, staff, business interactions, and more. These authoritative outputs help shape understanding and support decision-making across the sector.The role:We're looking for a skilled Principal Statistical Analyst to join our team and play a key role in shaping data driven decision making across the higher education sector.In this role, you will analyse large and complex datasets, transforming them into clear, impactful findings. You'll contribute to the strategy and prioritisation of work, and you will help develop innovative data outputs and statistical products, and design analytical solutions that drive real value for our users.What you'll be doing:Developing new processes, statistical measures, and analytical products that deliver real value to users.Contributing to strategic decision making by helping prioritise key development areas and improve ways of working.Designing and implementing effective analytical solutions - including automation to improve efficiency.Providing leadership, guidance, and mentorship to colleagues within the Official Statistics team.Applying advanced data manipulation and statistical techniques to analyse and quality assure complex datasets.Leading major work packages and collaborative projects, handling planning, scheduling, project management, and quality control.Producing clear written and verbal summaries that translate technical findings into user friendly insights.Becoming a subject matter expert in HESA data and the wider HE landscape, providing expert guidance internally and externally.Taking on line management responsibilities and/or mentoring less experienced analysts.Representing the organisation at internal and external working groups, conferences, and events, including offering expert advice on the analysis, interpretation, and use of HESA data.What we are looking for:Proven leadership ability, including staff management and oversight of complex, multi-layered projects.Extensive experience working with large datasets and complex data environments.Expert proficiency in SQL, Python and/or R.Strong track record of producing insightful analysis and presenting findings clearly in written and verbal formats.Experience using modern data visualisation tools such as Plotly, Tableau or Power BI.Solid understanding of statistical methods and analytical techniques.Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office, especially Excel.Nice to HaveExperience with additional analytical tools (such as Stata).Familiarity with agile working approaches such as Jira or Scrum.Knowledge of the higher education sector.Exposure to other programming languages.Skills & Personal QualitiesExpert at extracting, manipulating and quality assuring complex data using advanced query languages and data tools.Exceptional analytical and critical thinking skills.Strong ability to tackle strategic and organisation wide problems.Outstanding attention to detail.Able to generate innovative solutions to complex problems and lead their implementation.Brings original ideas, inspires others, and encourages continuous professional development.Experienced in leading, mentoring and supporting the development of less experienced analysts.Excellent communicator, able to explain complex concepts clearly to varied audiences.Skilled active listener, with the ability to align work with organisational goals., Confident in asking questions, challenging, which embraces all aspects of their identity including race and ethnicity, religion and belief, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, trans identities, age, class, disability, neurodivergence, or veteran status.Application process: Please let us know how we can best accommodate you throughout the recruitment process.
