Job description
The organisation delivers high volume, business critical digital services used by millions of users. Its digital services portfolio includes customerfacing services, internal operational systems, integration platforms, and cloudhosted infrastructure.
Ongoing work spans multiple delivery phases (discovery through live service) and includes:
- Transformation and modernisation of legacy systems
- Cloudnative and APIfirst platform development
- Securitycritical and datasensitive services
- Crossorganisation and crossgovernment integrations
Supplier resources are expected to integrate quickly into established delivery teams and contribute immediately to outcomes.
Scope of Services
The Principal Software Developer will:
- Provide technical leadership and direction across complex digital services
- Lead the design and assurance of scalable, secure, highavailability software solutions
- Act as a technical authority within agile delivery teams
- Influence architectural decisions and ensure alignment with engineering standards
- Support modernisation and migration away from legacy technologies
- Mentor and coach engineers, supporting skills transfer and team capability
- Work collaboratively with product, delivery, architecture, testing, infrastructure and UX roles
- Support delivery across all lifecycle stages (discovery, alpha, beta, live)
- Respond flexibly to changing priorities, including timecritical or policydriven work
Requirements
- Extensive experience operating at principal or lead software engineering level
- A proven track record delivering largescale digital services in complex environments
- Strong handson software development expertise (e.g. Java, .NET, RESTful APIs, eventdriven systems)
- Experience designing and delivering cloudnative solutions using modern DevOps practices
- Strong understanding of securebydesign principles, data protection, and operational resilience
- Experience working in agile, multidisciplinary teams within large organisations
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and technical decisionmaking skills
- Ability to work onsite in Swansea at least 60% of the time
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Experience leading or supporting formal service assessments or technical reviews
- Background in mentoring, coaching or leading engineering communities of practice
- Experience contributing to largescale transformation or modernisation programmes
- Familiarity with shared service platforms such as identity, payments or notifications
- Experience working in regulated or high assurance environments
