Job description
The Smart Hands Support technician provides on-site assistance for data centre operations, offering physical support to remote IT teams. Responsibilities include hardware installations, troubleshooting, media handling, cable management, and vendor coordination. The role is hands-on and involves tasks such as rack and stack, equipment replacement, basic diagnostics, and support for networking and server infrastructure., Hardware & Cabling Support

Perform rack and stack of servers, switches, routers, and other IT hardware.

Power cycle equipment, check LED indicators, and perform basic diagnostics on servers and network devices.

Unbox and prepare hardware during installation; remove and un-rack decommissioned equipment.

Replace or add hot-swappable components (e.g., RAID drives, memory, blades).

Support firmware/driver upgrades and remote management configuration per instructions.

Network & Connectivity Tasks

Assist in setup, patching, and basic troubleshooting of network devices and cabling.

Check and re-patch physical network connectivity as guided by the remote support team.

Support fiber patch cord replacements, patch panel troubleshooting, and wireless access point installation/testing.

Remote Team Collaboration

Act as on-site hands for remote teams-executing commands, reporting equipment status, and performing visual/audio verifications.

Relay console messages or error states to remote teams.

Execute commands on behalf of the remote team when required.

Media & Backup Handling

Manage backup tape operations: load/unload tapes, inventory tracking, and coordination with offsite storage vendors.

Assist in the resolution of media-related issues (e.g., stuck tapes or ATL faults).

Vendor & Facilities Coordination

Liaise with third-party vendors for replacements or installations as instructed.

Coordinate access and activities with facilities and security teams for maintenance, rack movements, or site surveys.

Participate in pre-installation/site surveys including power, cabling, and mounting coordination.

Documentation & Reporting

Maintain asset inventory and cable tagging.

Verify cable dressing as per client standards after any changes.

Report abnormalities, status updates, and physical inspections to the remote support team.

Maintain up-to-date diagrams and maps for cooling, power, network flow, and physical layouts.
Requirements
- Diploma or degree in IT, Electronics, or related field.
- 2+ years in data centre or field support roles.
- Basic knowledge of networking, server hardware, and storage systems.
- Familiarity with cabling (Ethernet/fiber), patch panels, and remote management tools.
- Comfortable working in a physically demanding environment.
- Strong communication and coordination skills.
- Willingness to work flexible shifts or be on-call as needed.
