Role Area 1: Fraud Prevention Centre (FPC)
The FPC is a rapidly growing area within HMRC Security, focused on protecting customers from identity-related fraud and stopping malicious activity across HMRCs digital services. youll support analysts tackling real-world fraud threats while learning how security, customer protection and digital services work together.
In this role, youll have the opportunity to:
- Support investigations into suspected identity fraud, helping to identify patterns, suspicious activity and potential vulnerabilities in HMRC digital services.
- Work alongside analysts and operational teams to assess fraud reports, contribute to case reviews, and understand how customer accounts are secured and restored.
- Learn how identity threats emerge and evolve, contributing insights that help strengthen HMRCs fraud prevention approaches and customer protections.
- Gain exposure to wider fraud prevention tools, processes and stakeholder groups, building an understanding of how HMRC combats fraud at scale.
Role Area 2: Identity Verification & Authentication (IDVA)
Youll be joining the team that manages our new internal Identity and Access Management (IAM) service. Youll contribute to high-profile projects that modernise our identity technologies that HMRC staff use to access all of its services and applications., * Using Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) tools like Splunk to analyse audit logs.
- Identifying suspicious activity and collaborating with teams across HMRC to investigate and intervene.
- Being part of the Programme in testing, and new deploying new identity products, working with stakeholders across HMRC.

Reserve List

Merit List
After interview, a single merit list will be created, and you will only be considered for posts in locations you have expressed a preference for. Appointments will be made in strict merit order in line with the set number of roles in each location.

Hybrid working at HMRC
HMRC is an office-based organisation, and colleagues are expected to spend 60% of their working time in the office. Requirements
You currently studying an undergraduate degree where the placement year forms an accredited and compulsory/optional part of your bachelors programme? (For example: BSc or MSci degrees with an integrated placement year)
- You are studying for a degree in one of the following areas: (Cyber Security, IT, Computer Science, Design/Web Design or Forensic-related degree)
Eligibility Postgraduate study
This Industrial Placement is open to undergraduate students only. Applicants enrolled on postgraduate Masters degree programmes (for example, MSc, MRes or MA) from September 2026 are not eligible to apply.
Essential Criteria
We are looking for industrial placement students with: Strong team working skills Strong analytical skills. Has attention to detail. Effectively communicate using verbal, written and presentation skills to technical and non-technical audiences. Interest and awareness of the importance of Cyber Security. Ability to handle and analyse data from external sources
- Strong communicator, with excellent technical writing and dealing with external partners and interfaces., Customer facing roles in HMRC require the ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice in accurate spoken English and/or Welsh where required. Where this is an essential requirement, this will be tested as part of the selection process.
