Job description

The Temporary GIS Technician will support NVCOG geographic information systems (GIS) operations by developing pedestrian network data and supporting walkability analyses, with additional responsibilities including updates to public-facing maps, field data collection, and digitization of legacy materials., The employee may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Collect, validate, update, and maintain spatial data using GIS software tools.
  • Assist in the creation and management of metadata and documentation for GIS datasets.
  • Generate maps, graphs, and reports based on spatial data analysis to aid decision-making processes.
  • Assist in the maintenance of GIS databases, ensuring data integrity and security.
  • Prepares maps and other graphics for NVCOG documents and presentations.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of general principles and practices of GIS.

  • Ability to make and interpret maps, sketches, designs, and detailed drawings.

  • Proven experience working with GIS software, such as ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, or similar tools.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve computer-related issues effectively.

  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills for data management and documentation.

  • Ability to work independently and efficiently manage tasks and priorities.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present technical information to both technical and nontechnical audiences.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING ENVIRONMENT Work involves both office and field settings, requiring periods of sitting or standing, use of office equipment, and travel to various locations. Fieldwork may occur on uneven terrain and in variable weather. Some evening or weekend meetings may be required. Hybrid work is permitted at least one day per week at the supervisor's discretion., Current student or recent graduate of a bachelor's or master's degree program from an accredited college or university in Geography, Geographical Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field. If currently in a higher educational program, 2 years of demonstrated GIS coursework can be accepted.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Rate of pay is $20 an hour, up to 35 hours per week, starting after May 15, 2026 for approximately four months.
