This is a remote access assignment. The Candidate will work remotely daily and will remotely access customer systems and therein use approved IGS/customer provided communications systems. Travel is not required; however, the candidate may be required to attend onsite client meetings as requested., The Senior Database Architect will lead the design, migration, optimization, and ongoing support of complex, mission-critical database systems in a hybrid on-premises and cloud environment. This role is heavily focused on supporting and modernizing large-scale public health systems, including cloud-hosted implementations, ensuring data integrity, security, performance, and compliance with federal and state regulations. The architect will work closely with State IT teams, cloud engineers, integration specialists, and application teams in an AWS-based environment., * Design, implement, and maintain enterprise-grade database architectures supporting cloud environments (AWS and/or Azure).
- Lead and support the migration of databases from on-premises environments to the cloud, including PROD, TEST, and DEV environments.
- Define and execute data migration strategies, including transformation, validation, cleansing, and reconciliation of legacy data.
- Ensure database designs support high availability, disaster recovery, backup, and recovery requirements.
- Administer and optimize Microsoft SQL Server databases supporting transactional systems, integrations, and reporting workloads.
- Monitor and tune database performance to ensure scalability, reliability, and minimal impact on transactional systems.
- Support batch and real-time data processing, including large-volume submissions and near real-time data feeds to downstream systems and data warehouses.
- Support ETL pipelines and data integrations between systems and enterprise data warehouses.
- Ensure database systems comply with HIPAA, and applicable state and federal security standards.
- Create and maintain comprehensive database and architecture documentation, including data models, data dictionaries, configuration guides, and best practices.
- Develop procedures for upgrades, patches, monitoring, backup, recovery, and cost optimization.
- Support knowledge transfer and training efforts for State IT and operational staff.
Requirements
Do you have experience in Terraform?, * 10+ years of hands-on experience in database architecture, database administration, and data engineering roles.
- Proven experience supporting large-scale, mission-critical systems in government, public health, or similarly regulated environments.
- Demonstrated experience with cloud-based database architectures, preferably within AWS environments.
- trong background in on-prem to cloud migrations and hybrid architectures.
- Expert-level experience with Microsoft SQL Server (architecture, performance tuning, HA/DR).
- Experience with AWS services, and cloud-based data pipelines.
- Knowledge of ETL and integration tools such as SSIS and Rhapsody.
- Familiarity with containerized and cloud-native environments using Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform., * Experience with public health surveillance systems.
- Prior work on federally funded or state-sponsored IT modernization initiatives.
- Familiarity with HL7 messaging, ELR/eCR workflows, and health data standards.
