Job description

We are seeking a Senior Cloud Software Engineer to provide advanced engineering support for cloud-based application development, modernization, and DevSecOps implementation in support of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO)., The Senior Cloud Software Engineer supports HUD's enterprise modernization strategy by designing, developing, and deploying secure, scalable cloud-native solutions that enable data interoperability, AI readiness, and DevSecOps capabilities across the agency.

This position contributes to HUD's Foundation-First modernization initiative by supporting enterprise data architecture, secure cloud services, and integrated DevSecOps pipelines while ensuring alignment with federal cybersecurity standards and Zero Trust principles.

The Senior Cloud Software Engineer works as part of a multidisciplinary team supporting HUD OCIO modernization initiatives including cloud transformation, AI readiness, enterprise data architecture, and cybersecurity modernization.

This is a fully remote position supporting a federal government contract that requires a federal background check and NACI clearance. Candidates must reside in the United States.

Responsibilities

Cloud Application Development

  • Design, develop, and maintain secure cloud-native applications and services using modern programming languages and frameworks.
  • Implement microservices-based architectures and containerized applications for scalable federal systems.
  • Develop, build and maintain full-stack, cloud-hosted applications (frontend, backend, APIs, integrations) enabling secure data exchange across enterprise platforms.
  • Lead end-to-end solution design, coding, code reviews, and integration for enterprise applications.

Cloud Infrastructure & DevSecOps

  • Design and implement CI/CD pipelines to support automated software development and deployment workflows.
  • Integrate security testing and compliance checks into DevSecOps pipelines (SAST, DAST, dependency scanning).
  • Automate infrastructure provisioning using Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or ARM templates.

Enterprise Modernization Support

  • Support migration and modernization of legacy systems to cloud environments.
  • Collaborate with enterprise architects to implement scalable platform services supporting AI and advanced analytics initiatives.
  • Develop prototypes, proofs of concept, and pilot initiatives, subsequently advancing validated solutions to production-scale deployment.

Security & Compliance

  • Ensure cloud solutions meet federal cybersecurity standards including NIST 800-53, FISMA, and Zero Trust architecture principles.
  • Implement secure identity and access management integrations aligned with EICAM and Zero Trust requirements.
  • Support security monitoring, logging, and compliance reporting within cloud environments.

Collaboration & Agile Delivery

  • Work within Agile development teams supporting iterative delivery of HUD modernization initiatives.
  • Collaborate with product owners, data architects, cybersecurity teams, and business analysts to translate requirements into technical solutions.
  • Contribute technical documentation, architecture diagrams, and system design artifacts.

Requirements

Required Experience and Skills

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience including cloud application development.
  • Experience developing applications in AWS, Azure, or other federal cloud environments.
  • Strong proficiency in modern programming languages such as Java, Python, Go, or Node.js.
  • Experience implementing DevSecOps pipelines and CI/CD automation.
  • Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, or OpenShift.
  • Knowledge of federal frameworks including 508, NIST, FISMA, and FedRAMP.
  • Ability to pass required Federal background screening and obtain and maintain both government clearance and customer approval.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future., * Experience supporting U.S. federal IT modernization programs or large-scale government systems.
  • Experience integrating cloud platforms with enterprise data architecture and interoperability frameworks.
  • Knowledge of AI/ML infrastructure readiness and platform engineering.
  • Familiarity with identity and access management solutions supporting Zero Trust architectures.

Technical Skills

  • CI/CD: Azure DevOps, GitLab CI, Jenkins; test automation frameworks.
  • Security: AuthN/Z, secrets management, secure coding practices

Education and Certifications

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. May need to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
