Job description
We are seeking a Senior Data Engineer to design, optimize, and maintain data pipelines and systems that support HUD AI/ML proofs of concept and pilots. The Data Engineer will ensure efficient, scalable, and secure data workflows for machine learning, advanced analytics, and AI integration.
This is a fully remote position supporting a federal government contract that requires a federal background check and NACI clearance. Candidates must reside in the United States.
Responsibilities
- Design and optimize data pipelines and architectures for AI/ML workflows on cloud platforms.
- Develop ETL/ELT processes, ensuring data quality, consistency, and accessibility.
- Configure and manage AI/ML-ready cloud infrastructure (AWS Bedrock, Azure OpenAI).
- Collaborate with Data Scientists to operationalize models and enable scalable AI solutions.
- Implement data governance, versioning, and lineage tracking for compliance.
- Monitor and maintain high-performance data systems and optimize for throughput.
Requirements
Required Experience and Skills
- 5+ years of experience in data engineering for AI/ML workflows
- Expertise in cloud-native data systems and large-scale data processing
- Familiarity with AI/ML pipelines, reproducible workflows, and federal compliance
- Previous experience supporting HUD OCIO preferred.
- Ability to pass required Federal background screening and obtain and maintain both government clearance and customer approval.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.

- Cloud platforms: AWS Bedrock, Azure OpenAI, S3, Redshift, Data Factory
- ETL/ELT frameworks: Airflow, Spark, Databricks
- Data modeling, schema design, and optimization for AI workloads
- Programming: Python, SQL
- Version control: Git/GitHub/GitLab
- Data governance, metadata management, and logging

Education and Training

- Certifications in cloud data platforms (AWS, Azure), preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Candidates must reside in or within daily commuting distance of Washington, D.C.
- Must be willing and able to travel an estimated 25% of the time within the U.S.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. May occasionally need to lift up to 25 pounds.
