Job description

The purpose of this position is to provide conceptual design, technical expertise, and professional direction on all design and technical requirements for the implementation for both new and existing websites for the Smithsonian Associates. Under the direction of the IT director, the incumbent collaborates with all internal departments of Smithsonian Associates and the Office of the Chief Information Office (OCIO) to build and maintain PII-compliant, accessible, and mobile-friendly websites. The incumbent ensures maximum functionality of the Smithsonian Associates websites.

Smithsonian Associates (Associates) leverages the vast resources of the Smithsonian Institution to create pan-institutional public programs for Associates members and the general public. Associates' programs are created for in-person Washington DC area audiences and virtual audiences across the country with content delivered via Zoom. Associates curates and produces informative, enlightening, entertaining, and insightful programs, including lectures, seminars, courses, study tours, studio arts, performances, films, children's theater, and summer camp inspired by and amplifying the full character of the Smithsonian's collections, exhibitions, and research. Audiences of all ages explore topics in scientific, historic, artistic, and cultural expression. Through their participation, members and the public become involved in the Institution's work, creating broad interest and support for the Smithsonian.

The Smithsonian Associates is a financially independent educational non-profit business activity within the Smithsonian: funding derived from ticket sales, tuition, membership fees and fundraising., * Designs, develops, and maintains innovative, interactive websites in collaboration with other Associates departments, ensuring content is accessible to a broad public audience across a wide range of devices and browsers. Updates and maintains existing websites and apps to keep them aligned with current Smithsonian policies, industry standards, and best practices.

  • Develops connections between digital content management systems (CMS), linked data application programming interfaces (APIs), and other shared systems, web services and data sources.
  • In coordination with the Digital Advertising Specialist, plans and implements analytics tagging using Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics to track e-commerce transactions, website feature usage, and marketing campaign performance.
  • Effectively troubleshoots technical problems and communicates relevant information to management and staff in a consistent and timely manner.
  • Research and keep abreast of new standards and technologies for web design and development and evaluates if and how these new standards can be beneficial to Smithsonian Associates and their constituents.
  • Collaborate effectively with other SI units to ensure the integrity of digital assets and their alignment to current SI policies pertaining to digital usage and privacy.
  • Works with the various departments of Smithsonian Associates to evaluate and plan new website features, which could include a newly developed website, or enhancement to the already existing website, and functionality that provides a benefit to each department and to Smithsonian Associates members, customers and other constituents.

Requirements

Do you have a Bachelor's degree?, * Experience with Microsoft C# (.NET Core 7 or above);

  • A bachelor degree with at least 4 years of experience in website development and management;

  • Knowledge of HTML, CSS/SASS, JavaScript/TypeScript, Fetch, and JSON;

  • Ability to collaborate effectively and creatively with an interdisciplinary team including non-technical content providers.

  • Ability to research and make technology recommendations that comply with current requirements, website and customer needs, and industry regulations. The following skills would be beneficial for this position:

  • Knowledge of Tessitura CRM/Event Management software;

  • Familiarity with a front-end framework such as Vue, REACT, Angular, etc.

  • Knowledge of Visual Studio 2022 or greater and related tools for code development, evaluation, and analysis.

  • Knowledge of how to consume and interact with SOAP and REST services;

  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server or other relational databases;

  • Knowledge of Content Management Systems;

  • Knowledge of Internet Information Services (ISS) version 10;

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server 2016 or above;

  • Knowledge of third-party authentication systems such as Facebook, Google, and WebAuthn, and how to integrate them into a web application Applicants, who wish to qualify based on education completed outside the United States, must be deemed equivalent to higher education programs of U.S. Institutions by an organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials.
