Job description

The AI Engineer is a hands-on technical role responsible for designing, developing and deploying AI and machine learning solutions that advance TDL's language service platforms. Working directly under the AI Data Research Director, the AI Engineer will be a core contributor to the full lifecycle of AI technical solutions-from research and prototyping through to production deployment and ongoing optimisation.

The AI Engineer will play a pivotal role in optimising translation workflows and integrating advanced AI-driven language solutions to meet the highest quality standards and company protocols. The ideal candidate combines strong technical depth in machine learning, generative AI and NLP with a practical understanding of the localisation industry's tools, workflows and quality standards. They will work in close collaboration with human translators and post-editors, using their feedback to iteratively improve model performance. Proficiency in multiple languages is advantageous. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders are critical.   • Collaborate with the AI Data Research Director to implement AI strategies, translating research findings and business requirements into production-ready solutions.
  • Develop and implement LLM prompts and fine-tuning approaches to improve the quality of the AI Technical Solutions portfolio.
  • Build and maintain robust and compliant data pipelines for data collection, preprocessing, augmentation and storage, ensuring high-quality datasets underpin all AI solutions.
  • Integrate third-party AI platforms and tools alongside the development of proprietary solutions, ensuring seamless interoperability within TDL's existing technology stack.
  • Design, apply and maintain validation processes and quality evaluation frameworks, contributing to the definition of benchmarks, success metrics and evaluation methodologies.
  • Conduct regular performance audits of TDL's AI Technical Solutions to identify trends, areas for improvement, and opportunities to enhance efficiency and quality.
  • Apply responsible AI principles across all development work, including proactive identification and mitigation of model bias, hallucination risks and fairness concerns-particularly in regulated or sensitive content domains.
  • Ensure all developed solutions comply with data governance requirements and relevant industry standards including GDPR and ISO.
  • Create and maintain clear documentation for AI systems, including data models, architecture diagrams, experiment logs and performance metrics; train team members on best practices for leveraging AI and CAT workflows.
  • Provide technical expertise and support for AI-related projects, including troubleshooting and resolution of issues.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to gather requirements and structured feedback to iteratively develop and improve TDL's AI solutions and reduce error rates over time.
  • Act as a liaison between language and technology teams to ensure mutual understanding of requirements and effective integration of AI solutions.
  • Present findings and recommendations to stakeholders for informed decision-making, communicating complex AI concepts in a clear and accessible manner.
  • Stay current with the latest advancements in AI, NLP and machine translation research, proactively sharing relevant insights and techniques with the wider team.

Requirements

Do you have a Master's degree?, * Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, AI, Machine Learning, Linguistics, Natural Language Processing or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Additional certifications in AI, data science or localisation technology are a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience in machine translation post-editing, quality assurance, localization workflows enhancement and working alongside human linguists in an iterative feedback loop.
  • Proven experience with custom MT engine development or adaptation (e.g. using ModernMT, fine-tuned open-source NMT frameworks or commercial MT APIs such as DeepL or Google Cloud Translation).
  • Hands-on experience in designing and implementing machine learning models and NLP pipelines, with at least 2 years in a role directly relevant to language or translation technology.
  • Solid programming skills in Python (and optionally R), with experience using frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, HuggingFace Transformers or similar.
  • Experience working with large language models (LLMs), fine-tuning approaches and prompt engineering techniques.
  • Familiarity with data engineering practices, including ETL pipelines, data versioning and working with large-scale datasets.
  • Experience integrating third-party APIs, cloud-based AI services (e.g. AWS, GCP or Azure) and MLOps tooling is desirable.
  • Native or proficient in English is mandatory. Knowledge of additional languages is advantageous., * Strong technical proficiency in machine learning and deep learning, with particular expertise in NLP, transformer models and sequence-to-sequence architectures.
  • Deep understanding of the localisation industry's technology ecosystem, including CAT tools (e.g. SDL Trados, memoQ), Translation Management Systems (e.g. Phrase, XTM, Plunet), translation memory (TM) leverage, terminology management and standard localisation file formats (XLIFF, TMX, TTX).
  • Practical knowledge of MT-specific quality evaluation frameworks, including MQM (Multidimensional Quality Metrics), BLEU, COMET and GEMBA, as well as post-editing workflows and human evaluation methodologies.
  • Understanding of neural MT architectures, adaptive MT, domain adaptation techniques and the trade-offs between custom and commercial MT solutions.
  • Ability to write clean, well-tested and maintainable code, with experience of version control (Git) and collaborative development practices.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms and AI frameworks, with a strong understanding of data privacy and compliance requirements including GDPR, and the specific confidentiality obligations that arise when handling client data in regulated industries.
  • Awareness of responsible AI principles, including bias detection and mitigation, hallucination risks in generative models, and fairness considerations-especially in high-stakes or regulated content domains.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to design rigorous experiments, interpret results critically and draw actionable conclusions.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex AI concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including translators, project managers and senior leadership.
  • Capable of working collaboratively across diverse, cross-functional teams-including linguists, software developers and business stakeholders-adapting to varied workflows and contributing constructively to shared goals.
  • A detail-oriented mindset with adaptability to work in a fast-paced, ever-evolving tech and multicultural environment.
