Job description

The Senior Software Engineering Manager for the GM Home Energy team is responsible for setting the technical and organizational direction and leading multiple engineering teams that deliver new and innovative software solutions for the GM Energy business domain, including GM Home Energy and related programs.

They will own delivery for high impact customer and partner experiences across mobile, web, integrations, and data services that power capabilities such as energy program enrollment, home energy management, leasing and sales workflows, partner integrations, and grid/DER engagement platforms., Our engineers work in highly collaborative environments across UX, mobile, web, data, streaming, and custom rules/decisioning engines. We regularly work on cutting-edge cloud technologies and invent new integration and engagement patterns along the way.

Leading highly technical teams through the full software development lifecycle using industry best practices is paramount in this role.

Key Responsibilities

Technology & Delivery Leadership

  • Define and drive the technical strategy and execution roadmap forHomeEnergy platforms (mobile apps, web portals, APIs, event streams, and data services) in support of GM Energyobjectives.

  • Be a technology expert across software architecture, infrastructure, build anddeploymentpipelines, observability, and engineering processes for multiple teams.

  • Lead the delivery of exceptional, secure, and resilient software using multiple languages and technologies (e.g., modern web/mobile stacks, cloud-native services, event streaming, dataplatforms).

  • Ensure your teams meet or exceed reliability, performance, security, and compliance expectations for customer-facing and partner-facing energy products.

Org & People Leadership

  • Build, lead, andretainmultiple high-performing engineering teams (e.g., mobile, full-stack, data/integration) aligned to Energy Engagement business outcomes.

  • Mentor and develop technical talent-from new college hires to senior/staff engineers and first-line managers-creating clear growth paths and succession plans.

  • Own workforce planning and staffing decisions for your area, in partnership with HR, aligned tooverallorg plans and GM's strategic priorities.

  • Foster a culture of ownership, psychological safety, accountability, and continuous learning that turns challenging, ambiguous ideas into robust production solutions.

Cross-Functional & Business Partnership

  • Partner closely with product management, design, GM Energy business stakeholders, and otherinternal and externalengineering organizationstoalign onpriorities, scope, and value delivery.

  • Have a broad, enterprise-wide view of the business and strong appreciation for strategy, processes, capabilities, enablers, and governance acrossbusiness domains

  • Actively manage dependencies with upstream and downstream systems and resolve cross-team impediments quickly.

Execution Excellence

  • Establish andmaintainengineering metrics and KPIs (e.g., delivery throughput, quality, reliability, adoption) that directly contribute to GM's strategic and GM Energy program goals.

  • Champion agile practices (Scrum/Kanban, CI/CD, trunk-based development, automated testing, feature flags) and ensure consistent execution across teams.

  • Drive architectural decisions that balance speed, quality, and long-term maintainability, including use of Azure services, event streaming (Azure Event Hub, Kafka, Pulsar), caching (Redis), and data modeling best practices.

  • Ensure adherence to security, privacy, regulatory, and safety expectations across all Energy Engagement software solutions, working with platform, security, and compliance partners as needed.

Change Leadership & Innovation

  • Demonstrate managerial courage to challenge the status quo, simplify complex systems, and define creative solutions in a rapidly evolving energy and EV ecosystem.

  • Champion change management intheorg, and leading teams through organizational, technology, and business transitions (e.g., new program launches, platform migrations, cost management initiatives).

  • Scan industry trends in energy, grid services, DER management, and customer engagement platforms, and translate them into actionable technology and product opportunities for GM Energy.

Requirements

  • A strong background in software architecture and engineering for cloud-native, data-intensive systems.

  • Deep experience integrating across enterprise and external ecosystems (utilities, installers, OEM systems).

  • A proventrack recordof building and scaling high-performing engineering organizations., + Bachelor's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or related technical field, or equivalent experience.

  • 12+ years of experience developing and deliveringcutting-edgeenterprise-grade applications, including cloud-native systems. At least3+ of those years should include leading multiple teams or a large, complex team as a software engineering manager or equivalent.

  • Demonstrated experience leading engineering organizations ofroughly 10-20+ engineers (ICs and/or managers), including hiring, performance management, coaching, and organizational design.

  • Strong hands-on background in building sophisticated, scalable, secure software systems on cloud platforms (preferably Azure), including experience with:

  • Event streaming and messaging (Azure Event Hub, Kafka, Pulsar).

  • Caching technologies (Redis).

  • Modern web and/or mobile stacks and REST/GraphQLAPIs.

  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of modern software development practices (Agile/Scrum, SDLC, CI/CD, test automation, observability).

  • Proven ability tofacilitateproductive engagement and trade-off decisions between engineering, product, design, and business stakeholders.

  • Track recordof delivering complex, integrated solutions in an interconnected environment, ideally involving CRM, billing, data platforms, or external partner integrations (e.g., utilities, installers, grid partners).

  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills, capable of switching between executive-level discussions and deep technical reviews.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • 5+years of experience managing multiple engineering teams and/or managers, in a high-growth or transformational environment.

  • Experience delivering customer-facing products in one or more of the following domains:

  • Energy management, DER/solar/storage, grid services, or utilities.

  • EV charging, home energy integration, or connected vehicle platforms.

  • Expertisein drivingnumerousprojects across business and IT portfolios simultaneously; demonstrable ability to sequence and de-risk a multi-quarter roadmap.

  • Experience coaching and training technical staff on new and emerging technologies (e.g., event-driven architectures, data platforms, AI/ML-powered engagement, experimentation platforms).

  • Strong experience with database modeling and data structure principles, including designing scalable schemas for event/data hubs and analytical use cases.

Company Vehicle: Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review, you will be eligible to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, through which you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate. Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least 3 times a week {or other frequency dictated by their manager}.
