Job description

The Data Modeling Analyst provides senior-level data modeling analysis and support to SSA's Data Strategy and Enablement (DSAE) Data Administration team under Work Order 0.55-212. The role is dedicated to supporting Enterprise Data Architects (EDA) by delivering logical and physical data modeling and related modeling activities for projects across various business domains. The Data Modeling Specialist partners with EDAs, project teams, business stakeholders, and database engineers to translate business needs into accurate, complete, and reusable data models that align with SSA's enterprise data standards and broader data architecture direction. This role calls for a collaborative professional with hands-on experience using data modeling tools, strong business acumen and communication skills, and a ready-to-learn attitude who can contribute across modeling and adjacent data administration work as needed.

Design Tasks:

  • Provide logical and physical data modeling support and related modeling activities for projects across various business domains within SSA's Data Administration scope.
  • Support Enterprise Data Architects (EDA) by developing, maintaining, and reviewing logical and physical data models in alignment with SSA's enterprise data standards and modeling guidelines.
  • Partner with EDAs, project teams, business stakeholders, and database engineers to elicit modeling requirements and translate them into accurate, complete, and reusable data models.
  • Review existing data models, data dictionaries, schemas, and documentation; recommend improvements aligned with SSA's enterprise standards, reference data architecture, and modeling best practices.
  • Support implementation of SSA's enterprise reference data, reference data architecture initiatives, and related development changes throughout the lifecycle.
  • Design and review database schemas across PostgreSQL, SQL Server, DB2, and Oracle in alignment with SSA's enterprise data standards and modeling guidelines.
  • Document logical and physical models, data dictionaries, model decisions, naming conventions, and modeling patterns to support reuse, traceability, and onboarding of project teams.
  • Support data analysis and profiling activities to inform model design and identify quality, consistency, and structural issues across SSA's enterprise datasets.
  • Provide modeling input to data integration, data exchange, and metadata initiatives, including recommendations on open file formats and data interchange standards (such as JSON, XML, and Avro) as they relate to model design.
  • Conduct requirements elicitation and analysis to ensure data models accurately represent business needs and integrate with downstream systems.
  • Provide modeling guidance and consultation to database engineers, developers, and architects in support of consistent, standards-aligned data solutions.
  • Contribute to data administration activities beyond modeling as needed to support the overall modeling workflow and team priorities.
  • Communicate and collaborate with stakeholders across SSA components, providing modeling expertise across analysis, design, and review discussions.
  • Publish and maintain modeling documentation, standards artifacts, and project materials in SSA's Confluence, JIRA, and SharePoint environments, including updating project tickets and tracking modeling work items.
  • Support version control for model artifacts and track changes across model iterations where applicable to project workflow.
  • Develop technical documents, modeling artifacts, presentations, and weekly status reports to fulfill work order objectives.

Requirements

Do you have experience in Visio?, Do you have a Bachelor's degree?, * Equivalent combination of education, training, certifications, and demonstrated experience in data modeling, enterprise data architecture support, or database design. A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Management, or a related technical field is preferred but not required.

  • Minimum 7+ years of relevant experience in logical and physical data modeling, enterprise data architecture support, or database design in complex enterprise or federal environments.
  • Strong, hands-on experience performing logical and physical data modeling using relational and non-relational data modeling tools (like Erwin Data Modeler, Hackolade, or comparable products).
  • Demonstrated experience delivering data modeling support across multiple business domains and projects concurrently.
  • Strong experience with database schema design across PostgreSQL, SQL Server, DB2, and Oracle in alignment with SSA's enterprise data standards and modeling guidelines.
  • Experience supporting SSA's enterprise reference data initiatives, reference data architecture, and enterprise data standards.
  • Strong understanding of relational modeling fundamentals, including primary and foreign keys, parent-child relationships, referential integrity, and constraints.
  • Strong understanding of modeling best practices including normalization, denormalization, naming conventions, lineage, and traceability.
  • Familiarity with SSA's enterprise data modeling standards and the ability to apply established naming conventions, class words, and modeling patterns consistently across projects.
  • Experience translating conceptual models into logical and physical designs, and walking models through review cycles with architects and stakeholders.
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to engage directly with business stakeholders, ask the right questions, and translate business needs into accurate logical and physical data models.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to clearly explain modeling concepts to non-technical audiences and contribute effectively in stakeholder discussions.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented working style with a "can-do" and "ready-to-learn" attitude; willingness to contribute to data administration activities beyond modeling as needed to support the team and workflow.
  • Experience reviewing existing data models, data dictionaries, schemas, and documentation and recommending improvements aligned with SSA's enterprise standards.
  • Familiarity with open file formats and data interchange standards including JSON, XML, and Avro as they relate to data modeling.
  • Strong technical writing, problem-solving, and analytical skills with the ability to translate business needs into clear, well-documented data models.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, Visio, Confluence, JIRA, and SharePoint.
  • Familiarity with federal IT environments preferred.
  • Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) certification through DAMA International, or active pursuit of CDMP certification, is a plus.
