Job description

We are seeking a Technical Sales & Design Specialist who will drive residential and commercial sales in Montana. This role is best suited for someone with experience in solar PV and battery sales, but is ideal for someone who enjoys blending technical system design, customer education, and consultative sales.

You will work directly with customers to evaluate their energy goals-backup power, resilience, electrification readiness, rate optimization, and long-term cost savings-and design the right solution to meet those needs. The role includes stand-alone grid-tied solar design, battery-first or storage-centric projects, off-grid projects, and retrofits of battery storage to existing solar PV systems.

This position sits at the intersection of sales, design, and electrical understanding, and plays a critical role in setting projects up for success from initial concept through contract execution., Sales & Customer Engagement

  • Proactively identify and cultivate new residential and commercial sales leads through strategic networking, active community engagement, and representation at local events and workshops.
  • Design and sell solar PV and battery storage systems, including grid-tied solar, solar + storage, off-grid, and storage retrofits.
  • Use a consultative sales approach to assess customer goals such as backup power, load coverage, electrification, utility rate optimization, and future expandability.
  • Educate homeowners on system capabilities, limitations, and tradeoffs (battery sizing, critical load selection, whole-home vs partial backup, etc.).
  • Prepare and present proposals via video conference, phone, and/or in-person meetings.
  • Guide customers through the purchase agreement and closing process with clarity and confidence.

Technical Design & Analysis

  • Develop preliminary system designs for residential solar and battery projects.
  • Understand and apply residential electrical concepts, including main service ratings, subpanels, load calculations, and backup configurations.
  • Recommend appropriate battery solutions based on customer goals and site constraints (e.g., partial vs whole-home backup, retrofit compatibility).
  • Collaborate with design and engineering teams to ensure projects are technically feasible and construction-ready.

Pipeline & Project Handoff

  • Manage a personal sales pipeline and log all customer communication in Salesforce CRM.
  • Set clear expectations with customers regarding installation process, timeline, and next steps.
  • Communicate effectively with Residential Operations to ensure a smooth handoff from sale to implementation.
  • Support internal feedback loops to improve system design accuracy, sales processes, and customer experience.

Collaboration & Team Contribution

  • Work collaboratively with the Sales Team, Design, and Operations in a non-competitive, team-based environment.
  • Share knowledge, exchange best practices, and participate in continuous improvement efforts.
  • Be open to giving and receiving feedback to strengthen individual and team performance.

Requirements

  • Ability to represent Independent Power well in the community, attending events, organizational membership meetings, workshops, etc
  • Strong communication, presentation, and follow-up skills.
  • Proven experience delivering excellent customer service.
  • Solid understanding of solar PV systems and battery storage fundamentals.
  • Working knowledge of electrical systems, NEC Code, and how they impact solar + storage design.
  • Ability to explain technical and financial concepts clearly to customers.
  • Comfort with basic financial analysis and customer-facing metrics (ROI and system payback period).
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with experience managing a large and active sales pipeline.
  • Self-aware, accountable, and professional while juggling multiple priorities.
  • Proficient with computers, Salesforce CRM, and Microsoft Office (or equivalent tools).
  • Team-oriented mindset with a collaborative approach to sales.

Valued but Not Required

  • Ability to read and interpret architectural and electrical drawings.
  • Experience using Aurora Solar or similar PV design software.
  • Experience designing, selling, or installing battery retrofits on existing solar PV systems.
  • NABCEP Certification and/or SEI Solar PV coursework
  • Prior experience selling in markets with TOU rates, resiliency-driven storage demand, or electrification-focused customers.

Why This Role Matters

This is not a high-pressure, transactional sales role. Success is measured by technical accuracy, customer trust, and long-term project success. As energy storage becomes a core part of residential solar, this role helps ensure homeowners receive solutions that truly meet their needs-today and into the future.

  • Dental insurance
  • Health insurance
  • Paid time off
