Job description

The Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for designing, maintaining, and scaling the organization's core IT infrastructure. This position oversees the architecture and performance of servers, networking, virtualization, and security platforms across all company locations, serving as the primary escalation point for complex infrastructure and network issues. The role partners with IT support staff and software developers to ensure systems remain reliable, secure, and high-performing. Operating within a regulated environment, the Senior Systems Engineer ensures infrastructure aligns with standards such as HIPAA and 21 CFR Part 11. In addition to maintaining current systems, the position plays a critical role in shaping long-term infrastructure strategy, automation initiatives, and technology modernization. All duties are carried out in accordance with the company policies, SOPs, and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) as well as all applicable local, State, and Federal regulations., * Architect, implement, and maintain the organization's enterprise IT infrastructure, including compute, storage, networking, and security layers.

  • Design and manage server environments using Microsoft Windows Server and enterprise directory services.
  • Lead the architecture and management of virtualization environments using platforms such as VMware vSphere or Microsoft Hyper-V.
  • Design and maintain scalable and secure network architecture, including routing, switching, and VLAN segmentation.
  • Configure and manage enterprise firewalls, VPN gateways, and network security policies.
  • Analyze network traffic and system performance using tools such as Wireshark and enterprise monitoring platforms like PRTG Network Monitor.
  • Lead troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for complex infrastructure and networking issues.
  • Manage and optimize directory services, identity infrastructure, DNS, and group policy architecture.
  • Design secure remote access infrastructure and site-to-site connectivity across multiple locations.
  • Implement and manage enterprise backup and disaster recovery strategies using solutions such as Veeam Backup & Replication.
  • Lead infrastructure capacity planning and performance optimization initiatives.
  • Establish patch management and vulnerability remediation strategies across infrastructure systems.
  • Develop and maintain infrastructure documentation, including network diagrams, architecture standards, and operational procedures.
  • Implement proactive monitoring, logging, and alerting systems to maintain infrastructure reliability.
  • Design redundancy, failover, and business continuity strategies for critical systems.
  • Evaluate emerging infrastructure technologies and lead modernization initiatives.
  • Collaborate with software developers to ensure applications are optimized for infrastructure performance and security.
  • Serve as the final escalation point for advanced infrastructure and network incidents.
  • Manage relationships with technology vendors, internet providers, and infrastructure partners.
  • Lead infrastructure security initiatives to safeguard company systems and sensitive operational data.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience in systems engineering with a strong foundation in computer science principles and IT infrastructure management.
  • Hands-on expertise with cloud platforms including AWS familiarity with cloud security best practices is essential.
  • Strong understanding of computer networking concepts including VPNs, firewalls, DNS/DHCP management, load balancing strategies, and network security protocols.
  • Skilled in programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, experienced with scripting for automation purposes.
  • Certifications related to systems engineering or cloud computing (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect) are preferred but not mandatory.   • Experience architecting enterprise IT environments in high-availability or regulated industries.
  • Strong expertise in enterprise networking hardware from companies such as Cisco Systems, Fortinet, or similar vendors. (CCNP or CCIE preferred.)
  • Experience designing hybrid cloud infrastructure using platforms such as Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure. (AWS Solutions Architect or Azure Solutions Architect preferred.)
  • VMware VCAP or other advanced VMware certifications.
  • Advanced scripting and automation experience using tools such as PowerShell.
  • Experience designing monitoring, observability, and infrastructure telemetry systems.
  • Strong understanding of security architecture, network segmentation, and infrastructure hardening.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High attention to detail and organization.
  • Physical requirements include the ability to operate office equipment, sit for long periods throughout the day, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work after hours and weekends if needed., * Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • 8-12 years of progressive experience in infrastructure engineering, systems architecture, or network engineering.
  • Advanced experience managing enterprise server and virtualization environments.
  • Deep knowledge of network protocols, routing, switching, DNS, DHCP, and VPN technologies.
  • Hands-on experience configuring routers, switches, and firewalls in enterprise environments.
  • Experience implementing disaster recovery and business continuity systems., * Bachelor's (Required)
