Job description

Job Summary: The Sr. Network Engineer's role is to take ownership of the organization's networking and telecom technologies and keep them running smoothly. This responsibility includes designing, building, and implementing new topologies; coordinating escalated support requests; troubleshooting network issues to ensure continuous access to critical data; and assuming technical lead on projects which have a large network component. The Sr. Network Engineer will be responsible for large scale, cross-functional projects and relevant research, and will work closely with other TCC teams to ensure the success of each project. This position often requires a flexible schedule and the ability to travel in order to address enterprise components without affecting the care and services offered by the organization. Adhere to the TCC Ch'eghwtsen' model of service and guiding principle which requires providing timely and effective service along with the ability to interact with others in a way that inspires trust and demonstrates respect, compassion and empathy., Essential Functions: This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbent(s). Representative Duties: Under the direct supervision of the IT Operations Manager incumbent will:

  1. Specify, configure and install switches, firewalls, access points, and voip technologies at datacenter, branch, and rural branch locations.

  2. Monitor, maintain, and direct corrective action for networks to include vendor managed microwave and satellite connections.

  3. Perform on-site analysis, diagnosis, and resolution of complex network problems.

  4. Guide the process to discover, recommend, and implement hardware and software solutions.

  5. Evaluate, patch, and upgrade device firmware to improve functionality and stability or address security concerns.

  6. Maintain and reconcile inventory of equipment using current department asset manager.

  7. Resolve incoming tickets from end users needing networking and telecommunications support.

  8. Assist in developing long-term strategies, capacity planning, and business continuity procedures.

  9. Record, track, and document the problem-solving process, including all successful and unsuccessful decisions made, and actions taken, through to final resolution. Other Responsibilities:

  10. Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  1. College degree or equivalent work experience in the fields of computer science, computer engineering, or enterprise IT infrastructure administration. Certifications preferred.

  2. In-depth, hands-on experience with switching, routing, VoIP, wireless, network cabling, network architecture and design, and best practices development.

  3. Five (5) years of experience in Information Technology.

  4. Valid driver's license with clean driving record.

  5. Must pass background check pursuant to Federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements and State of Alaska background check. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  6. Detailed knowledge of Juniper, Palo Alto, Mitel, Aruba, Cisco, or equivalent.

  7. Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

  8. In-depth, hands-on experience with enterprise and desktop applications, including Microsoft operating systems, and Microsoft productivity software.

  9. Support and design of WAN, LAN, and VPN topologies.

  10. Demonstrated experience with development and operation of infrastructure and networking equipment for production environments.

  11. Ability to conduct research into emerging technologies and communication concepts.

  12. Experience in the development, presentation, and maintenance of technical documentation.

  13. Ability to effectively prioritize, delegate, and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.

  14. Ability to coordinate with other subject matter experts to deliver technologies to the end user.

  15. Understanding and use of generally accepted project management philosophies.

  16. Expert written and verbal communication skills. Supervision: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Supervision

Physical demands: Incumbent must be available for on-call work. Sitting for extended periods of time. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, hand and power tools, and to handle other computer components. Occasional inspection of cables in floors and ceilings. Lifts and transports heavy to moderately heavy objects, such as computers and peripherals. Must be efficient and effective in sometimes busy and stressful environment..
