Job description

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodations. SELECTION: The position is filled by the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools SALARY AND Salary based on experience. 250-day employment EMPLOYMENT: term – Network Engineer Supplemental Pay Schedule. Harrison County Professional Salary Schedule FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

  1. Work collaboratively with the Supervisor of Technology and Information, Network Engineer, and IT staff in performing all duties and responsibilities.
  2. Install, configure, and maintain Cisco routers, switches, wireless controllers, VoIP, network security appliances, and related infrastructure.
  3. Administer, configure, and maintain Palo Alto Networks firewalls and security appliances, including rule management, monitoring, and threat prevention.
  4. Administer, maintain, and troubleshoot VMware and other virtual server environments supporting district applications and services.
  5. Monitor network and server performance; diagnose and resolve connectivity, hardware, and software issues.
  6. Maintain and upgrade network and server hardware/software, including firmware and OS updates.
  7. Implement and enforce network and cybersecurity best practices, including segmentation, access control, and multi-layered defense.
  8. Monitor for vulnerabilities, threats, and unusual activity across network/server systems; remediate findings promptly.
  9. Collaborate with the Security Operations Center (SOC) for real-time monitoring, threat detection, incident response, and cybersecurity investigations.
  10. Respond to cybersecurity incidents, conduct investigations, and coordinate with leadership, WVDE IT staff, and third-party partners as needed.
  11. Manage user access, authentication services, and directory integrations (e.g., RADIUS, Active Directory).
  12. Configure and support site-to-site and remote-access VPNs.
  13. Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and documentation in compliance with FERPA, CIPA, and other applicable regulations.
  14. Lead or participate in development, planning, and implementation of technology infrastructure projects, including long-term network and server architecture.
  15. Ensure all operations and procurement adhere to county, state, and federal policies/guidelines, as well as E-rate rules and funding requirements.
  16. Prepare documentation for E-rate audits and funding requests.
  17. Collaborate with WVDE IT staff and network engineers to support statewide network initiatives.
  18. Coordinate and support connectivity to the West Virginia state K-12 network (e.g., WVNET, WVEIS).
  19. Maintain accurate documentation: diagrams, IP inventories, backup procedures, disaster recovery plans, power backup systems, and configuration records.
  20. Develop, document, and maintain disaster recovery plans and procedures for critical network, server, and data systems.
  21. Regularly test and verify the reliability of data backups, power system backups (such as UPS, battery, and generator systems), and disaster recovery processes.
  22. Participate in disaster recovery exercises and update recovery plans as needed to ensure preparedness and compliance.
  23. Provide technical guidance and training to district IT staff.
  24. Support cybersecurity awareness and training programs for staff and students.
  25. Participate in on-call rotation and after-hours maintenance as required.
  26. Develop rapport with staff and model professional conduct.
  27. Maintain familiarity with current trends and publications in network, security, and technology fields.
  28. Manage and verify reliable backups and anti-virus/risk management operations.
  29. Provide training and guidance on networked databases and customized software deployments, as needed.
  30. Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Do you have experience in Vulnerability management?, Do you have a Bachelor's degree?, + Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or a related field.

  • Current Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification (preferred).
  • Minimum five (5) years of professional experience supporting Cisco-based networks in an enterprise or multi-site environment.
  • Experience administering Palo Alto Networks firewalls and security appliances.
  • Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, routing, switching, and network protocols (DHCP, DNS, VLANs).
  • Experience administering and supporting virtual server environments.
  • Experience supporting and maintaining storage and server solutions.
  • Experience with fiber network installation, configuration, and troubleshooting, including fiber connectivity between sites.
  • Experience in network security, cybersecurity monitoring, incident response, and vulnerability management.
  • Familiarity with E-rate rules, guidelines, and documentation requirements for K-12 (preferred).
  • Experience collaborating with external partners, including WVDE IT staff and network engineers (preferred).
  • Familiarity with the West Virginia state K-12 network (preferred).
  • Experience planning, testing, and implementing technology infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of county, state, and federal policies, guidelines, and regulations related to K-12 technology, cybersecurity, and student data privacy.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.
