Job description

Please note before reading: candidates must be legally authorized to work in the EU without visa sponsorship.

Help us redefine digital payments, and grow the people building them.

You take ownership. Not just over your code, but over architectural decisions, system health, and how a team develops. You like working in environments where things are growing, evolving, and not everything is fully defined yet. Where your experience actually matters.

You care about building things the right way, but also about how people work together. Coaching others, challenging ideas, and having meaningful technical discussions gives you energy. You're looking for a role where you can combine technical depth with real influence.

This role gives you exactly that.

Why this role exists

As Mechhive continues to grow, our platforms handle increasing volumes, more integrations, and higher expectations around reliability and performance. Our systems process thousands of transactions daily across three platforms, working with dozens of external partners and payment providers. To support this growth, our engineering team has expanded rapidly.

That combination requires senior engineers who:

  • Take ownership of technical direction
  • Act as sparring partners for both the team and management
  • Help keep systems scalable and teams effective

Our mission is to redefine payment experiences through simple, intuitive, and innovative solutions that empower people to transact on their own terms. Our vision is to lead digital payments innovation globally and give everyone the freedom to transact effortlessly. Achieving that starts with how we build, and with the people who build it.

Your role and impact

You operate at the intersection of ownership, innovation, agility, and people development:

  • Design and build complex back-end features across Skine, Rewarble, and Relograde
  • Make architectural decisions and take ownership of their implementation
  • Coach junior and mid-level developers through reviews and pairing
  • Raise engineering standards by leading through example
  • Build and maintain critical API integrations with external partners
  • Identify and reduce technical debt with a clear, goal-oriented mindset
  • Act as a technical sparring partner for product and management
  • Own incidents end-to-end, from diagnosis to long-term prevention
  • Contribute to technical roadmap and prioritization
  • Document decisions and ensure knowledge is shared across the team

Requirements

  • A senior role with real ownership, not just responsibility
  • A growing environment where innovation and pragmatism go hand in hand
  • A people-centered team where coaching and collaboration matter
  • An agile way of working, focused on learning and continuous improvement
  • Clear goals and the freedom to decide how to reach them

You bring:

  • 5+ years of back-end experience, with a proven track record of delivering complex systems
  • Strong knowledge of Java and Spring Boot
  • Experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs
  • Experience with MySQL optimization, caching, and performance
  • Strong testing discipline and experience defining testing strategies for complex systems
  • Comfort with architectural trade-offs and explaining them clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience with CI/CD, deployments, monitoring, and production systems

You are:

  • Proactive and take initiative when something needs attention
  • A strong communicator who builds trust through empathy and respect
  • Focused on collective success rather than individual achievement
  • Someone who leads by example, with or without a formal title
  • Skilled at navigating ambiguity and solving problems pragmatically

Nice to have:

  • Experience with message queues and event-driven architecture
  • Experience with microservices or transitioning from monolith to services
  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code or cloud platforms

How we work

  • Full-time, on-site in Eindhoven
  • Tools: Linear, GitHub, Slack, Figma
  • Sprint-based, agile, and outcome-driven
  • High trust, high ownership, clear goals
  • Direct collaboration with leadership

Ready to take ownership?

If you're looking for a role where your technical experience, coaching mindset, and ownership truly shape the outcome, we'd love to to talk.
