Job description
This is a hands-on technical manager role. You will spend roughly half your week in code, building, debugging, reviewing pull requests, pairing with engineers, and the other half on architecture, standards, vendor conversations and stakeholder engagement.
If your last hands-on Azure integration build was three years ago, this is not the role for you. If you still enjoy writing a difficult Function App on a Friday afternoon and you also know how to grow a team, read on.
You will lead the integrations team and own the target architecture for how our SaaS source systems, Workday, Oracle Symphony, NetSuite, ecommerce platforms and more, connect to our data, finance and operational systems. You will set the standards and patterns the Integrations Engineers follow across our Azure integration stack (APIM, Logic Apps, Function Apps, Service Bus, Event Grid), line-manage the team, and personally deliver the most complex and highest-risk integration flows in the estate.
All new integration assets are being built on Azure. A legacy Mulesoft estate is in a controlled wind-down, and you will own that migration while keeping the legacy flows safely operational until retirement., Engineering and Architecture
- Personally design and build the hardest, highest-risk integrations on the Azure stack: APIM, Logic Apps, Function Apps, Service Bus, Event Grid. This is not delegated work.
- Own the integration architecture for all SaaS source systems and internal services. All new build is Azure-native.
- Define and enforce integration patterns and standards: API design, event-driven flows, retry/error handling, idempotency, observability, security -- anchored on Azure-native services.
- Produce reference implementations the team builds from: APIM API templates, Function App patterns, Service Bus topologies, deployment pipelines.
- Build and maintain the team's CI/CD engineering toolchain on Azure DevOps/GitHub Actions, including test frameworks and observability dashboards in Application Insights and Log Analytics.
- Define and maintain the API and integration catalogue: ownership, purpose, SLAs.
Legacy Migration
- Own the controlled wind-down of the legacy Mulesoft Anypoint estate: keep it safely operational, migrate flows onto the Azure stack on programme timelines, and decommission cleanly.
Team Leadership
- Line-manage the Integrations Engineers (FTE and FTC): own hiring, performance, development, one-to-ones, and the team's engineering culture.
- Run a healthy engineering practice: review every non-trivial pull request, pair on the hardest pieces, unblock the team in code, and grow more junior engineers.
- Manage supplier and vendor relationships across the integration stack.
Incidents and Stakeholders
- Act as senior technical escalation point and on-call backstop for major integration incidents, including evenings and weekends where required.
- Report progress, risks and architectural decisions clearly to senior leadership in plain language.
- Be the senior technical voice in vendor and SaaS conversations on integration capability.
Requirements
- 8+ years in integration/API engineering, with a recent track record of personally designing AND building production integrations on Azure.
- Deep, current, hands-on experience with the full Azure integration stack: APIM, Logic Apps, Function Apps (C# or Node.js), Service Bus, Event Grid, Key Vault, Managed Identity, Application Insights, Log Analytics.
- You must have committed Azure integration code in the last 12 months.
- Strong API design: REST, JSON, OpenAPI, and event-driven patterns -- with examples of what you have built, not just designed.
- Strong API security on Azure: OAuth 2.0, JWT, mutual TLS, Managed Identity, Key Vault, APIM policies, applied in real implementations.
Mulesoft and Migration
- Working knowledge of Mulesoft Anypoint Platform sufficient to safely operate and migrate flows off a legacy estate. We are winding it down , but you need to keep it stable through the transition.
SaaS Integration Experience
- Demonstrable experience personally building integrations with enterprise SaaS: ideally Workday, Oracle Symphony, NetSuite, Salesforce or comparable enterprise systems.
Engineering Standards and Leadership
- Experience setting and enforcing engineering standards across a team of integration engineers by example and code review, not by document alone.
- Experience line-managing or technically leading a small team, including hiring, performance management and developing junior engineers.
Commercial and Communication
- Strong commercial awareness: Azure consumption cost drivers, vendor commercials, TCO of integration choices.
- Excellent written and verbal communication: able to write a clean architecture decision record AND brief senior stakeholders in plain language.
- Comfortable working flexibly during critical delivery windows and major incidents, including evenings and weekends.
- Right to work in the UK without sponsorship.
What Would Make You Stand Out (Desirable)- Nice to have, but not required.
- Azure Solutions Architect Expert or Developer Associate certification
- Event-driven architectures at scale on Azure
- Hands-on Azure builds with Workday, Oracle Symphony or NetSuite specifically
- Azure landing-zone or platform-level standards for an integration estate
- Led a migration off Mulesoft, BizTalk, Tibco or Boomi with code-level involvement
- Retail, hospitality, QSR or omnichannel industry background
The Stack
- Azure APIM
- Logic Apps
- Function Apps (C#/Node.js)
- Service Bus and Event Grid
- Azure DevOps / GitHub Actions
- Application Insights + Log Analytics
- Key Vault + Managed Identity
- Mulesoft Anypoint (wind-down)
Benefits & conditions
Pulled from the full job description
- Employee discount
- Company pension
- Discounted or free food, * You will be expected to be on the tools. Reviewing PRs, pairing with engineers, debugging a failing Function App, writing APIM policies, this is a working week, not just a management calendar
- You will also be the senior escalation point for major integration incidents, including out of hours. When a Workday-to-NetSuite finance feed falls over ninety minutes before month-end cut-off on a Sunday evening, you are the person in the logs alongside the on-call engineer.
- The pace is fast, the scope is broad, and the expectations of the programme are high. We are hiring people who thrive on that.
Why Join Us?
- Genuinely dual builder-manager role -- real team leadership AND real Azure code in your week, every week.
- Modern Azure integration stack with the chance to define standards and build all reference implementations from scratch.
- Live cloud migration: cleanly retire a legacy Mulesoft estate and stand up the Azure-native replacement on a real programme timeline.
- High reporting line with regular exposure to Director and CIO level.
- Competitive base salary, performance bonus, private medical, pension, life assurance and a generous staff discount.
- Hybrid working from our Manchester city-centre office (three days per week on-site.)
Not quite at the manager level we are also hiring engineers for this brand new data team!!
Pay: £60,000.00-£75,000.00 per year
Benefits:
- Discounted or free food
