Job description
The Barbershop Harmony Society seeks a creative, detail-oriented Marketing & Content Designer to work in close collaboration with the Director of Marketing and the Manager, Editorial & Content Creation. This role supports the production of high-quality content across print, digital, and social channels, helping to tell the stories of BHS members, chapters, districts, and events in compelling, on-brand ways., Content Creation & Editorial Support (20%)
- Create all internal advertising assets for the bi-monthly Harmonizer magazine
- Assist with writing, editing, and proofreading content for the Harmonizer magazine, the Livewire e-newsletter, and other BHS publications.
- Draft and edit content for web pages, blog posts, program announcements, and event promotions.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of the social media content calendar
- Write short- and long-form content that captures BHS member stories, chapter spotlights, event recaps, and organizational news.
- Support repurposing of print and digital content across multiple channels (web, email, social, print).
- Leverage AI-assisted writing and editing tools to improve efficiency while maintaining BHS voice and quality standards.
- Create Annual Report
Graphic Design & Visual Content (60%)
- Serve as the primary creative lead for BHS event marketing, including designing event logos, visual identity systems, and brand guidelines for major conventions and seasonal events.
- Design and produce all event signage, from large-format banners and stage graphics to wayfinding, sponsorship displays, and on-site directional materials.
- Design digital and print assets, including social media graphics, event promotional materials, program book layouts, newsletter headers, and web banners.
- Create the official Midwinter and International convention program books from concept through print-ready production, including layout, typography, photo integration, and coordination of vendor ad placements.
- Collaborate with requesting department(s) to create on-brand visual assets for marketing campaigns, events, and merchandise.
- Own the creative development and production of BHS's annual report, including concept, layout, data visualization, photography selection, and print-ready file preparation.
- Own production of sheet music covers, songbook layouts, and other design deliverables for BHS Marketplace and Hal Leonard distribution.
- Assist with photo selection, captioning, and basic photo editing to support publication and web needs.
- Maintain brand consistency across all visual and written materials in accordance with BHS brand guidelines.
Collaboration & Administrative Support (20%)
- Manage vendor coordination, ad sales tracking, and program book logistics for major BHS conventions and events.
- Coordinate with internal departments (Events, Marketplace, Music & Education, and Executive Office, among others) to gather content, assets, and approvals.
- Coordinate with customers who purchase ad space across our channels.
- Participate in team meetings, editorial planning sessions, and project debriefs.
Requirements
Do you have experience in Web writing?, Do you have a Bachelor's degree?, The ideal candidate brings a blend of editorial writing ability, graphic design aptitude, and web fluency. This person is a self-starter who can take direction, manage their own workflow, and contribute meaningfully to a small, mission-driven team. They are equally at home crafting a short social caption, building out a web page, or laying out an important print asset in Adobe InDesign., * Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, marketing, graphic design, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience in content creation, editorial writing, marketing, or a related role.
- Demonstrated writing ability across multiple formats (long-form, short-form, web, social).
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign and Photoshop (or Illustrator).
- Experience with or strong aptitude for content management systems (Craft CMS, WordPress, or similar).
- Proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive, Slides).
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.
Preferred
- Experience with HTML/CSS basics for web content formatting and minor site edits.
- Familiarity with email marketing platforms (Mailchimp, Constant Contact, or similar).
- Experience with social media content creation and platform management.
- Comfort working with or willingness to learn AI-assisted tools
- Experience in a nonprofit, membership organization, or arts/music context.
- Photography skills with an eye for composition and storytelling (preferred, not required).
- Video editing experience
- Experience with Basecamp, Slack, or similar project management and collaboration tools., * An adaptable communicator who can write clearly and compellingly across editorial and marketing contexts.
- Visually fluent. Someone who understands design principles and can produce polished digital and print assets, not just passable ones.
- Comfortable taking directions and incorporating feedback, while also showing initiative on defined tasks.
- Organized and deadline-driven, even in a fast-moving, multi-project environment.
- Genuinely curious about storytelling and enthusiastic about the BHS mission and community.
- Willing to learn new tools, workflows, and approaches, including AI-assisted content production., * Do you have experience in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign and Photoshop (or Illustrator)?
