Job description
- Performs QC of samples submitted to the NGS lab. This includes assessing the quantity and quality of materials to determine suitability for NextGen DNA sequencing procedures.
- Submits samples for qPCR to the Gene Expression core
- Constructs Illumina libraries for sequencing on Illumina platforms
- Properly tracks samples and documents laboratory work
- Communicates with supervisor and other core personnel about experimental results in a timely and professional manner
- Works with the supervisor to define deliverables and timelines for project completion
- Tests, troubleshoots, and implements new protocols for library construction, DNA shearing, sample cleanup, and size selection, using novel procedures as they become available in the literature or from vendors
- Contributes to the preparation, updating, and organization of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
General Lab Operation and Maintenance Functions
- Performs maintenance tasks associated with the upkeep of the NGS lab, such as the proper disposal of biohazard trash, receiving and storing of samples and reagents
- Monitors reagents and consumables and regularly updates inventories
- Assists with the administrative duties necessary for proper handling of receipts and orders
- Revision of sample sheets, tracking, and disposal of samples in MyBiotech
- Freeze and fridge maintenance and documentation in MyBiotech
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
Do you have experience in Windows?, Do you have a Bachelor's degree?, BA/BS in a related scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Core or technology-specific licensure and/or certifications, where applicable. Additionally, yearly certificate and compliance training, if required. PREFERRED:
The preferred applicant will have a BS/BA in Molecular Biology or a related scientific field with familiarity of in basic techniques and instrumentation used in the molecular biology laboratory, including specific NGS procedures that include (but are not limited to):
- Genomic DNA purification, quantification, and manipulation; PCR; NGS DNA library construction and quality assessment/evaluation.
- Use of robotics for high-throughput processing of nucleic acids and DNA library samples.
- Hands-on experience with Illumina, PacBio, and/or ONT NGS instrumentation and technology.
- Basic laboratory citizenship, including organization of equipment and supply inventory.
- Instrument run coordination and maintenance.
- Preparation of common buffers and solutions.
- Computer literacy in Windows/UNIX systems, Microsoft Office package.
- Familiarity with utilizing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), iLAB, and laboratory information management system (LIMS).
